Guide for Authors
Types of paper
The following types of contribution are published in The Journal of Cleaner Production:
Original article: Standard research papers of 6000-8000 words in length, with tables, illustrations and references, in which hypotheses are tested and results reported.
Review article: Only critical review papers will be considered that provide a novel perspective and critical evaluation on topics of interest to broader JCLP readership. Manuscripts simply summarizing the current state of knowledge are not suitable. The format and length of review papers are more flexible than for a full paper. Typical reviews are less than 12?000 words including references. Review papers are peer reviewed. In a cover letter submitted with a critical review, authors must briefly comment on their expertise in the subject matter and provide a list of their own related publications on this topic. Authors must also comment on related reviews published on the topic and how their manuscript provides relevant new insights and perspective beyond the available reviews.
Technical note: Concise scientific summaries/reports of approximately 500 words of new products/technologies of relevance to the field of cleaner production. Illustrations may be included but not company logos.
Conference Reports: Reports on major international conferences of particular interest to The Journal of Cleaner Production, approximately 1000-2000 words.
Book Reviews: Reviews of approximately 500-1000 words on new books, software and videos relevant to the scope of The Journal of Cleaner Production.
Letters to the Editor: Letters designed to clarify or respond to the content of a paper previously published in the Journal or to raise questions about future directions of The Journal of Cleaner Production or other issues that a reader may wish to pose that are relevant to the mandate of the Journal.
Ethics in publishing
Authors have a responsibility to present their work with the intellectual integrity that the scientific community expects. Before submitting a paper for consideration authors should familiarize themselves with the Ethics Toolkit. Authors should ensure that they have written entirely original works, and if they have used the work and/or words of others, these should be appropriately cited or quoted. Authors should not concurrently submit a paper to more than one journal or primary publication, and should not submit a previously published paper for consideration.

Declaration of competing interest
All authors must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organizations that could inappropriately influence (bias) their work. Examples of potential conflicts of interest include employment, consultancies, stock ownership, honoraria, paid expert testimony, patent applications/registrations, and grants or other funding. Authors should complete the declaration of competing interest statement using this template and upload to the submission system at the Attach/Upload Files step. Note: Please do not convert the .docx template to another file type. Author signatures are not required. If there are no interests to declare, please choose the first option in the template. Submission declaration and verification
Submission of an article implies that the work described has not been published previously (except in the form of an abstract, a published lecture or academic thesis, see 'Multiple, redundant or concurrent publication' for more information), that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its publication is approved by all authors and tacitly or explicitly by the responsible authorities where the work was carried out, and that, if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, including electronically without the written consent of the copyright-holder. To verify originality, your article may be checked by the originality detection service Crossref Similarity Check.
Preprints
Please note that preprints can be shared anywhere at any time, in line with Elsevier's sharing policy. Sharing your preprints e.g. on a preprint server will not count as prior publication (see 'Multiple, redundant or concurrent publication' for more information).
Use of inclusive language
Inclusive language acknowledges diversity, conveys respect to all people, is sensitive to differences, and promotes equal opportunities. Content should make no assumptions about the beliefs or commitments of any reader; contain nothing which might imply that one individual is superior to another on the grounds of age, gender, race, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, disability or health condition; and use inclusive language throughout. Authors should ensure that writing is free from bias, stereotypes, slang, reference to dominant culture and/or cultural assumptions. We advise to seek gender neutrality by using plural nouns ("clinicians, patients/clients") as default/wherever possible to avoid using "he, she," or "he/she." We recommend avoiding the use of descriptors that refer to personal attributes such as age, gender, race, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, disability or health condition unless they are relevant and valid. When coding terminology is used, we recommend to avoid offensive or exclusionary terms such as "master", "slave", "blacklist" and "whitelist". We suggest using alternatives that are more appropriate and (self-) explanatory such as "primary", "secondary", "blocklist" and "allowlist". These guidelines are meant as a point of reference to help identify appropriate language but are by no means exhaustive or definitive.
Author contributions
For transparency, we encourage authors to submit an author statement file outlining their individual contributions to the paper using the relevant CRediT roles: Conceptualization; Data curation; Formal analysis; Funding acquisition; Investigation; Methodology; Project administration; Resources; Software; Supervision; Validation; Visualization; Roles/Writing - original draft; Writing - review & editing.
