Manuscript Submission
Standard Operating Procedure for Processing Manuscript Submissions
The American Journal of Transplantation charges a standard fee of $50 USD for all unsolicited submissions with the exception of revised manuscripts and Letters to the Editor. This fee covers expenses for the processing and evaluation of your submission by office staff and Editors. AJT participates in the Wiley Transplant Peer Review Network (TxPRN), a consortium of 7 journals formed to simplify the publication process for authors and reduce the time and effort involved in the peer review of transplantation research. External peer review and network referral are not guaranteed by payment.
Uploaded manuscripts are vetted by the editorial office staff for their compliance with the Instructions to Authors. Manuscripts that do not comply are unsubmitted and the authors have the opportunity to correct their manuscript and submit again while maintaining the same manuscript ID. Manuscripts that involve clinical trials are also vetted for clinical trials registration (e.g. http://www.clinicaltrials.gov) and compliance with CONSORT guidelines (http://www.consort-statement.org).
AJT now requires submitting authors to enter or create an ORCID iD when submitting a paper. AJT has a strong interest in helping researchers correctly identify contributors. An ORCID iD – a unique and persistent identifier -- ensures that researchers can be easily and correctly connected with their research activities, outputs, and affiliations. ORCID provides a free and secure registry where individuals can manage their records, making it easier to recognize and reward the contributions of authors and match research output with funding.
Authors of all manuscripts except Editorials and Letters to the Editor will be required to provide a data availability statement upon submission for review; no manuscript will be sent to reviewers without the statement.
Once the manuscript checklist has been completed by the editorial office staff, the Editor-in-Chief is notified that a manuscript is ready for assignment. The Editor-in-Chief assigns the manuscript to both a Deputy Editor and an Associate Editor. The Associate Editor is responsible for assigning and inviting the referees. Assignment of the referees is made with acknowledgement of the authors' preferences, although there is no guarantee that the authors' preferences will be used.
Once the referees' opinions are complete, the Associate Editor makes a recommendation. The recommendation is forwarded to the Deputy Editor who reviews the material and adds their own recommendation/decision. These recommendations provide the basis for the composition of the final decision letter by the Editor-in-Chief.
The Editor-in-Chief ordinarily prepares all decision letters, with the exception of those manuscripts on which the Editor-in-Chief is an author, or for which the Editor-in-Chief recuses himself due to a conflict of interest. The conflict of interest guidelines are outlined separately in the Instructions to Authors and on our website. In most cases the Editor-in-Chief is merely overseeing that the editorial processes have been completed and that the manuscript has been properly vetted. The Editor-in-Chief ensures that the issues are properly formulated to a decision level about whether or not resubmission will be permitted. Resubmission is normally permitted for those manuscripts where the issues can be resolved by the author without major changes in the manuscript. The Editor-in-Chief also resolves differences of opinion between the Deputy and Associate Editors.
Supplement Guide
All papers, including supplements, whether submitted or invited to the American Journal of Transplantation, will be subject to peer review.
Submission
Organizers and authors seeking to publish material as a supplement to AJT should submit the following information to the Editorial Office:

Manuscript Preparation
Supplements should be prepared in accordance to AJT's Instructions for Authors.
Review
All proposals for a supplement to AJT must be submitted to the Editorial Office for review. The Editor-in-Chief has the right to reject or accept supplements, as well as the right to determine whether any individual article in a supplement submitted for publication will be accepted for publication.
Charges and Publication Time
If accepted, supplements must be sponsored for publication at a price negotiated with the publisher's supplement representative. The publisher will prepare a quote based upon the estimated number of printed pages, color illustrations, and number of extra copies ordered, in addition to subscriber copies. All supplements are published online and in print.
The Editorial Office will forward the cover letter to the publisher, who will quote a price to the authors and/or sponsor.
Publication time, from acceptance of final paper to delivery of bound copies in our warehouse, is 10–12 weeks.
Instructions to Authors
Effective July 2021
1. Overview
The American Journal of Transplantation (AJT) is the official journal of the American Society of Transplantation and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. AJT seeks to provide its readership with literature of both the highest quality and impact through a process of careful peer review and editorial comment. All papers, including those invited by the Editorial Board, are subject to peer review. AJT’s average turnaround time from submission to decision is 20 days.
AJT participates in the Transplant Peer Review Network, a consortium of 6 journals in the field of transplantation. In addition to the adoption of a shared list of ethical policies and principles, the journals share a set of standard questions to make the submission process consistent between journals and to facilitate the automatic transfer of manuscripts to enable rapid decisions. High-quality papers not suitable for publication at their target journal may receive a decision of Reject with Transfer Offer to another journal in the Network.
On submission, authors should choose one or two referral journals, in the order of preference, or “no referral.” When a manuscript is referred, all reviews and recommendations are sent with the manuscript to the receiving journal. Authors must then complete the submission process at the receiving journal. For more information, please visit wileytxnet work.com.
