伦敦大学皇家霍洛威学院历史系招收博士研究生

About the Project

Royal Holloway, University of London, The National Archives (TNA), and the UK Parliamentary Archives (UKPA) are delighted to announce a call for applicants for a potentially fully funded part-time collaborative doctoral studentship from October 2023, under the AHRCs Collaborative Doctoral Award scheme funded by the Techne Doctoral Training Partnership. The successful candidate will then be invited to join the partnersstage two application to the Techne Collaborative Doctoral Award scheme and the final outcome confirmed at the end of April.*

If you have any questions about this process please contact matthew.smith@royalholloway.ac.uk.

This PhD by Practice in Public History project will contribute to the commemorative planning and programming surrounding the Equal Franchise Act 1928 of The National Archives, UK Parliamentary Archives and Royal Holloway, enabling the student to immerse themselves in the field in the academic, heritage and archive, and public engagement contexts. The project will be supervised by Dr Stella Moss (Royal Holloway), Dr Matthew Smith (Royal Holloway), and Vicky Iglikowski-Broad (TNA), with Dr Mari Takayanagi (UKPA) acting as an adviser. The student will be expected to spend time at all three partner institutions. Due to the date of the centenary, the practice element of the PhD, and a desire to make this opportunity accessible to a wider range of students, this studentship is being offered on a part-time basis at 0.5FTE. This means the studentship would be available for seven years.

Project Overview

Recognised by UNESCOs Memory of the World UK Register for its exceptional historical significance, the Equal Franchise Act 1928 granted equal voting rights to women and men. As a result, both men and women could vote at the age of 21, free from any property qualification. Its passage marked, in essence, the moment the UK became a full democracy. This PhD by Practice in Public History project will combine traditional archival research with the design, delivery, and evaluation of a programme of activity to commemorate this landmark Act, supported by TNA and the UKPA, accompanied by a 40,000-word reflective thesis.

This programme will explore the efforts of the wide range of women and organisations involved in campaigning for equal suffrage; the diversity of their experiences, methods, and priorities; and varying conceptions of citizenship in interwar Britain. It will include a research-driven online exhibition, blogs, podcasts, and an events series collaboratively produced with TNA and UKPA, resourced by Royal Holloway, and hosted on a bespoke Royal Holloway project website.

Details of Award if successful

The Techne CDA Studentship will fund a 0.5 FTE studentship for 84 months (1 Oct 2023 to 30 Sep 2030), with an option to extend this by up to a further 6 months FTE for placement/career enhancing activity. Students must submit their portfolio and thesis within their funded period.
