Instructions to Authors

Preparation of Manuscript

Language editing, if your first language is not English, is optimal to ensure that the academic content of your paper is fully understood by the journal's editors and reviewers. Manuscripts with numerous errors will detract from the scientific review and are often returned to authors without review and with a request for language editing.  Language editing does not guarantee that your manuscript will be accepted for publication.   Further information on language editing services can be found at https://academic.oup.com/journals/pages/authors/preparing_your_manuscript/language_services. Authors are liable for all costs associated with use of such services.

Format and Style Guidelines

Manuscripts must be submitted exclusively to Pain Medicine. Make sure that your manuscript file is submitted in a MS Word file, double-spaced, typed in 12 point font and has no hard returns at the end of lines.  All textual elements should begin flush left with no paragraph indents and two returns after every element, such as titles, headings, paragraphs, legends, etc. Please be sure to keep a backup copy of the file for reference, as accepted manuscripts are not returned.

Manuscripts that do not adhere to the following instructions will be returned to the corresponding author for technical revision before undergoing peer review.

Title Page: The first text page should contain: 1. Title; 2. Full names and affiliations for all authors, including highest academic degree; 3. Full postal address, telephone number, and e-mail address for the corresponding author followed by funding sources, conflict of interest and full disclosure information (see below); 4. Running title of no more than 6 words. Please note that the title page must be included as the first page of your manuscript in the file submitted.

Abstract: A structured abstract must be included as page two for most article types. It must be 250 words or less with the following headings as appropriate: Objective, Design, Setting, Subjects, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. There should be no blank lines between headings, and all heading titles must be bolded. Up to six key words must also be provided with the abstract. Letters, Commentary, Perspective and Editorial submissions should not include an abstract

Research papers, Review papers, and Case Reports/Series should be structured as follows: Title page, as above; Abstract, as above; Introduction; Methods including statistical analyses; Results; Discussion including clinical significance when appropriate; Conclusions; Acknowledgments; Conflict of Interest/Disclosure summary; References; Tables; Table legends; Figures; Figure legends.

For other article types, the above format may be varied between the Introduction and Acknowledgments sections.

Details of Style: Follow guidelines set by American Medical Association Manual of Style, 11th Edition published by OUP.  Double-space throughout, including title page, abstract, text, acknowledgments, references, legends for illustrations, and tables. Start each of these sections on a new page, numbered consecutively in the upper right-hand corner,

Drug or Device names: Always use nonproprietary names of drugs, devices, and other products and services, unless (rarely) the specific trade name of a drug is essential to the discussion. In such cases, use the trade name and trademark once in parentheses after first use of the generic name and the generic or descriptive name thereafter.

Abbreviations: Keep abbreviations to a minimum, and define each at its first use. Do not use abbreviations in the abstract.

Research Resource Identifiers (RRIDs): Authors are encouraged to provide the RRID for each resource (antibody, organism, tool, etc.) used in a journal article. Where applicable, materials and methods should be described and referenced in sufficient detail for other investigators to repeat the work. If no RRID already exists for the resource, authors are asked to register their resource to obtain an RRID. Please see the following examples of properly cited research resources:

Antibody: Boehringer Cat# 1697 838, RRID:AB_2178887

Organism: Fgf9Eks/Fgf9+ mouse, RRID:MGI:3840442

Cell Line: Coriell Cat# GM03745, RRID:CVCL_1H60If y

Tool: CellProfiler Image Analysis Software, RRID:nif-0000-00280

References: References for Pain Medicine should follow the AMA manual of style. Identify with Arabic numerals inside parentheses. A full list of references should be provided in numerical order, sequentially as they appear in the text. Do not alphabetize. List all authors unless there are more than six. If there are more than six, list the first three then use “et al.”

For abbreviations of journal names, refer to List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus. Accuracy of reference data is the responsibility of the authors.

Policies

Authorship Criteria: Authorship is an explicit way of assigning responsibility, giving credit for intellectual work, and ensuring transparency. The following are the criteria for authorship in Pain Medicine:

Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND

Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content; AND

Final approval of the version to be published; AND

Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

All other persons making contributions that do not meet all four criteria should be acknowledged, per below.

Pain Medicine does not allow ghost authorship or ghost contributorship. If a writer meets criteria for authorship, they must be listed as such. If a writer does not meet the criteria for authorship then these contributors must be acknowledged, and their exact role and pay status (if relevant) must be mentioned .

Acknowledgment Statement: List all individuals who have substantially contributed to the work in this manuscript but who do not fulfill the authorship criteria. In addition to their degree and academic or business affiliation, also include their specific contribution (e.g., data collection, editing, etc). These individuals must agree to their names being listed in the acknowledgements. Please include this information in the text of your manuscript prior to the list of references.

Corresponding Author Responsibilities:

Serves as the primary contact on behalf of all coauthors.

Ensures that the Funding Sources, Conflict of Interest/Disclosure, and Acknowledgment Sections of the manuscript are complete and up-to-date for all authors.

Lists all persons who have contributed to the manuscript but are not authors, in the acknowledgement section and obtains permission from each person listed.

Receives an email prompting them to login into Author Services where they will be able to complete the licensing agreement on behalf of all authors on the paper.

Reviews electronic page proofs of article before publication. An email will be sent with instructions for downloading the file and returning corrections and answers to author queries to the publisher. The proofs should be carefully reviewed, including all author information. It is the corresponding author's responsibility to ensure that there are no errors in the proofs. Please note that an Erratum (correction statement) will only be published for errors that affect the science, results, or conclusions of the paper.

Preprint policy: Authors retain the right to make an Author’s Original Version (preprint) available through various channels, and this does not prevent submission to the journal. For further information see our Online Licensing, Copyright and Permissions policies. If accepted, the authors are required to update the status of any preprint, including your published paper’s DOI, as described on our Author Self-Archiving policy page.

Prior Presentation and Publication: The editors will consider manuscript submissions covering study results that have been previously presented at a local, national, or international conference and/or for which an abstract has been published or presented as a poster or platform session at societal meetings However, Pain Medicine does not generally consider preprints for publication.  If a manuscript is accepted and it is subsequently found that large parts or the entire study have been previously published, the journal may retract the article and include a notice of redundant publication. Please note that Pain Medicine employs anti-plagiarism software. By submitting your manuscript to this journal you accept that your manuscript will be screened for plagiarism against previously published works that also includes your own publications.

Ethical Review Board Approval: All research on animals or humans must have the appropriate ethical review board approval for your institution or an appropriate institutional waiver (e.g., IRB). This information must be included in the Methods section of the manuscript.

Crossref Funding Data Registry: In order to meet your funding requirements authors are required to name their funding sources, or state if there are none, during the submission process. For further information on this process, visit the CHORUS initiative.

Article Summary: During the submission process of a revised paper, please include a brief article summary in the space provided. Please prepare a carefully-worded, brief 3-4 sentence summary (maximum 75 words) of your article to appear in the Table of Contents under the title of your article if accepted for publication. Please include succinct information about the study question, the nature of the study sample, and the findings. This information is required to proceed with submission of your article.
