We look forward to your submission.

Transparent Peer Review

Veterinary Medicine and Science is participating in a pilot on Peer Review Transparency. By submitting to this journal authors agree that the reviewer reports, their responses, and the editor’s decision letter will be linked from the published article to where they appear on Publons in the case that the article is accepted. Authors have the opportunity to opt out during submission, and reviewers can choose to remain anonymous unless they would like to sign their report.

Data Protection

By submitting a manuscript to or reviewing for this publication, your name, email address, and affiliation, and other contact details the publication might require, will be used for the regular operations of the publication, including, when necessary, sharing with the publisher (Wiley) and partners for production and publication. The publication and the publisher recognize the importance of protecting the personal information collected from users in the operation of these services, and have practices in place to ensure that steps are taken to maintain the security, integrity, and privacy of the personal data collected and processed. You can learn more at https://authorservices.wiley.com/statements/data-protection-policy.html.

Preprints Policy

Veterinary Medicine and Science will consider for review articles previously available as preprints. Authors are requested to update any pre-publication versions with a link to the final published article. Authors may also post the final published version of the article immediately after publication.

2. AIMS AND SCOPE

Veterinary Medicine and Science is a peer-reviewed journal for rapid dissemination of research in all areas of veterinary medicine and science. The journal aims to serve the research community by providing a vehicle for authors wishing to publish interesting and high quality work in both fundamental and clinical veterinary medicine and science.

Veterinary Medicine and Science publishes original research articles, reviews, case reports, and opinion pieces, along with editorials and commentaries. Invited reviews are solicited by the Editor-in-Chief and do not incur an Article Publication Charge (APC). Review proposals should be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief, Professor Gayle Hallowell (Gayle.D.Hallowell@nottingham.ac.uk) for consideration. Original research papers must report well-conducted research with conclusions supported by the data presented in the paper.

We aim to be a truly global forum for high-quality research in veterinary medicine and science, and believe that the best research should be published and made widely accessible as quickly as possible. Veterinary Medicine and Science publishes papers submitted directly to the journal and those referred from a select group of prestigious journals published by Wiley.

Veterinary Medicine and Science is a Wiley Open Access journal and for further information, please visit the Wiley Open Access website.

3. MANUSCRIPT CATEGORIES AND REQUIREMENTS

Veterinary Medicine and Science publishes a number of different article types including:

Original Articles

Original articles should contain reports of new research findings or conceptual analyses that make a significant contribution to knowledge. Original articles should be no more than 5,000 words, excluding references.

Reviews

Reviews should be critical reviews of the literature, including systematic reviews and meta-analyses and should not exceed 6,000 words, excluding references.

Invited Reviews

Invited Reviews are the same as regular Reviews but are solicited directly from authors by the Editor-in-Chief. If you have any review proposals, please email them to Professor Gayle Hallowell (Gayle.D.Hallowell@nottingham.ac.uk). Invited Reviews do not incur an Article Publication Charge (APC).

Editorials

Editorials are usually commissioned but unsolicited material may be considered. Please approach the Editorial Office (edoffice@vetmedscience.com) before submitting this material. Editorials have a limit of 1,000 words.

Commentaries

Commentaries cover a variety of topics of current interest in the veterinary sciences. Commentaries are generally limited to 1,500 words.

Opinion Pieces

Opinion Pieces provide a brief overview of a topical issue, a personal piece intended to prompt discussion and debate within the scientific community. Opinion Pieces are generally limited to 1,500 words.

Letters to the Editor

Letters to the Editor are welcomed and should not exceed 1,000 words.

Case Reports

Case Reports must report either a single or small number of cases describing a novel/unique presentation, or describe a technique or treatment that would alter management and prognosis of the condition, or be the first report of a disease in a particular location where epidemiology is a factor. Case reports do not have a word limit.

4. PREPARING YOUR SUBMISSION

Manuscripts must be submitted as a Word or rtf file and should be written in English. The manuscript should be submitted in separate files: title page; main text file; figures. Please note that line numbering is now required at submission.

Title Page

The title page should contain:

A short informative that contains the major key words. The title should not contain abbreviations (see Wiley's best practice SEO tips);

A short running title of less than 40 characters;

The full names of the authors;

The author’s institutional affiliations at which the work was carried out;

Acknowledgements

The present address of any author, if different from that where the work was carried out, should be supplied in a footnote.

Title

As a result of the findings of a recent study assessing the use of the term ‘Pilot Study’ in veterinary medicine (Rishniw & White, 2020), Veterinary Medicine and Science strongly discourages the use of the term ‘Pilot Study’ or ‘Preliminary Study’ in the titles of manuscripts. Any submissions with these terms in the title will be returned to the authors to address before the submission can be considered further.

Rishniw, M., White, ME.(2020) The term ‘Pilot Study’ is misused in veterinary medicine: a critical assessment. Veterinary Record 186, 65.”

Authorship

Please refer to the journal’s authorship policy in the Editorial Policies and Ethical Considerations section for details on eligibility for author listing.

Author Contributions

For all articles, the journal mandates the CRediT (Contribution Roles Taxonomy), for more information please see Author Services.

Acknowledgements

Contributions from anyone who does not meet the criteria for authorship should be listed, with permission from the contributor, in an Acknowledgements section. Financial and material support should also be mentioned. Thanks to anonymous reviewers are not appropriate.

Conflict of Interest Statement

You will be asked to disclose conflicts of interest during the submission process. See the section ‘Conflict of Interest’ in the Editorial Policies and Ethical Considerations section for details on what to include in this section. Please ensure that you liaise with all co-authors to confirm agreement with the final statement. The Conflict of Interest statement should be included within the main text file of your submission.

Ethics Statement

Authors will be required to confirm their adherence to Veterinary Medicine and Science’s Ethics Policy in the Editorial Policies and Ethical Considerations section during the submission process. If the manuscript is accepted, authors must provide an Ethics Statement confirming that they have adhered to the journals ethical policy. This should state the guidelines for humane animal treatment followed, and the ethical approval process and approval number, if available. If no ethical approval was required, for example, if the paper is a review which includes no original research data – this should be stated within the Ethics Statement. As Veterinary Medicine and Science operates a system of double-blind peer review, please ensure that this information is not included within the main text document. This information will be requested from you by the Editorial Office if your manuscript goes on to be accepted. Examples of how these statements may look are below:

Example of an Ethics Statement where ethical approval was required: ‘The authors confirm that the ethical policies of the journal, as noted on the journal’s author guidelines page, have been adhered to and the appropriate ethical review committee approval has been received. The US National Research Council's guidelines for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals were followed.’

Example of an Ethics Statement where ethical approval was not required: ‘The authors confirm that the ethical policies of the journal, as noted on the journal’s author guidelines page, have been adhered to. No ethical approval was required as this is a review article with no original research data.’

Main text

As papers are double-blind peer reviewed the main text file should not include any information that might identify the authors.

The main text file should be presented in the following order: (i) title, abstract and key words, (ii) main text, (iii) references, (iv) tables (each table complete with title and footnotes), (v) figure legends, (vi) appendices (if relevant). Figures and supporting information should be supplied as separate files.

Abstract

Please provide an abstract of no more than 250 words containing the major keywords. Abstracts should be structured according to the following headings: Background, Objectives, Methods, Results and Conclusions.

Keywords

Please provide 3-6 keywords and list them in alphabetical order. Keywords should be taken from those recommended by the US National Library of Medicine's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) browser list at https://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/.

Main text

Where possible, please structure the main text document according to the following headings (where appropriate): Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, Acknowledgements, Conflict of Interest Statement.

As papers are double-blind peer reviewed, the main text file should not include any information that might identify the authors. If the Conflict of Interest statement contains author-identifiable information, please move this to the title page prior to submission

The journal uses British spelling, however authors may submit using either option as spelling of accepted papers is converted during the production process

Footnotes to the text are not allowed and any such material should be incorporated into the text as parenthetical matter.

References

Manuscript may be submitted using any standard referencing style, as accepted papers will be converted to the journal’s standard style during production. It is essential, however, that authors include all key text elements required for references. Please refer to the reference list in a recent issue of the journal for guidance regarding information required for references (note article references lists are freely accessible online).

Tables

Tables should be self-contained and complement, but not duplicate, information contained in the text. They should be supplied as editable files, not pasted as images. Legends should be concise but comprehensive – the table, legend and footnotes must be understandable without reference to the text. All abbreviations must be defined in footnotes. Footnote symbols: †, ‡, §, ¶, should be used (in that order) and *, **, *** should be reserved for P-values. Statistical measures such as SD or SEM should be identified in the headings.

Figure Legends

Legends should be concise but comprehensive – the figure and its legend must be understandable without reference to the text. Include definitions of any symbols used and define/explain all abbreviations and units of measurement.

Preparing Figures

Although we encourage authors to send us the highest-quality figures possible, for peer-review purposes we are happy to accept a wide variety of formats, sizes, and resolutions.

Click here for the basic figure requirements for figures submitted with manuscripts for initial peer review, as well as the more detailed post-acceptance figure requirements.

Cover Image Submissions

This journal accepts artwork submissions for Cover Images. This is an optional service you can use to help increase article exposure and showcase your research. For more information, including artwork guidelines, pricing, and submission details, please visit the Journal Cover Image page:https://authorservices.wiley.com/author-resources/Journal-Authors/Promotion/journal-cover-image.html?utm_source=woljournal&utm_medium=display&utm_term=ag_text&utm_content=covers&utm_campaign=template_comms

Appendices

Appendices will be published after the references. For submission they should be supplied as separate files but referred to in the text.

Supporting Information

Supporting information is information that is not essential to the article but that provides greater depth and background. It is hosted online, and appears without editing or typesetting. It may include tables, figures, videos, datasets, etc. Click here for Wiley’s FAQs on supporting information.

Note: if data, scripts or other artefacts used to generate the analyses presented in the paper are available via a publicly available data repository, authors should include a reference to the location of the material within their paper.

General Style Points

The following links provide general advice on formatting and style.

Abbreviations: In general, terms should not be abbreviated unless they are used repeatedly and the abbreviation is helpful to the reader. Initially use the word in full, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. Thereafter use the abbreviation only.

Units of measurement: Measurements should be given in SI or SI-derived units. Visit the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) website at http://www.bipm.fr for more information about SI units.

Trade Names: Chemical substances should be referred to by the generic name only. Trade names should not be used. Drugs should be referred to by their generic names. If proprietary drugs have been used in the study, refer to these by their generic name, mentioning the proprietary name, and the name and location of the manufacturer, in parentheses.

Article Preparation Support

Wiley Editing Services offers expert help with English Language Editing, as well as translation, manuscript formatting, figure illustration, figure formatting, and graphical abstract design – so you can submit your manuscript with confidence.
