在开始看文献的时候，常常会看到“ e.g.”、“i.e.”、“et al.”和“etc.”这些缩写，乍一看，并不能看懂是什么意思。

e.g.是什么?
e.g.，中文意思是“例如”，相当于英文中的“for example/instance”，和单词e、g的读法一致。
它来源于拉丁文“exempli gratia”，e.g.就是取其首字母并在其后加“.”。
这种缩写方式常出现在SCI论文的参考文献部分中，通常会以这种方式对作者全名和期刊全称进行缩写。
用法注意事项：
e.g. 后面一般要加逗号（英式英语可不加）。
举例：
popular pets, e.g. cats and dogs.
The website has a variety of interactive exercises (e.g. matching games, crosswords and quizzes).

i.e.是什么?
i.e.，中文意思是“即，换言之，也就是说”，相当于英文中的“that is，in other words”，读音相同于单词i和e。
它来源于拉丁文“id est”，i.e.是它的缩写。
用法注意事项：
i.e.后面一般也要加逗号（英式英语可不加）。
举例：
the basic essentials of life, i.e. housing, food and water.
Some poems are mnemonics, i.e. they are designed to help you remember something.

et al.是什么?
et al.，中文意思是“等人”，相当于英文中的“and others”。
来源于拉丁文“et alii/alia”，et al.是它的缩写。
用法注意事项：
et al.前面一般不加逗号，除非期刊对引文格式有特别要求。
et al.如果放在句尾，且后面需要跟句点时，不必重复写两个句点，写一个句点即可（下文提到的etc.同理）。
举例：
They used an example given by Bahl et al.

etc.是什么?
etc.，中文意思是“等东西”。来源于拉丁文“et cetera”，etc.是它的缩写。
用法注意事项：
etc.前面一般要加逗号。
etc.中的et相当于and，所以不要出现and etc.这样的用法。
列举多种事物时，如果前面已有 i.e. / such as / for example / including等引导词，后面一般不加etc.，因为会显得重复冗余。
et al.和etc.都有“等”的意思，但et al.用于列举人名时的省略，而etc.用于列举事物时的省略。
举例：
Remember to take some paper, a pen, etc.
We talked about the contract, pay, etc.
