邓迪大学(UoD) Andrei Pisliakov组招聘博士生

一、研究方向

Prof. Pisliakovs group works in Computational & Theoretical Biophysics. His group uses various modelling and simulation tools from classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) calculations to electrostatic calculations in proteins, as well as various free energy calculations, docking, structure prediction, coarse-grain models, etc. His group routinely runs large-scale calculations using HPC facilities a local GPU cluster in Dundee and the Archer supercomputer in Edinburgh. The goal of their research is using physics-based methods to reveal molecular mechanisms of fundamental biological processes. In some cases this leads to practical applications, e.g. in drug design.

His primary research interests are:

1) Computer simulations of biomolecular systems - mainly proteins (enzymes & membrane proteins). Recent projects focussed on a wide range of proteins that are involved in: gene expression and regulation; signalling and transport across membranes; Parkinson disease; a novel anti-malarial drug; Covid-19; etc.

2) Proton transfer processes in energy-converting proteins, in particular using the Empirical Valence Bond (EVB) method developed by Arieh Warshel (Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2013), with whom I worked with in Los Angeles for 4 years.

He is working at two affiliations:

1) Division of Physics in the School of Science and Engineering

2) Computational Biology in the School of Life Sciences.

This is a perfect arrangement in terms of research because Dundee Life Sciences is a world-class research department, one of the top in the UK (#1 in the UK, ie above Cambridge and Oxford, in the latest REF assessment). He has many excellent collaborations with world-class researchers from Biology and Medicine here, and they regularly publish in top journals. Publications can be found at https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Andrei_Pisliakov

二、CSC奖学金申请

The prestigious CSC scholarship covers all tuition fees and research fees and provides living expenses for the duration of 4 years, as well as one return flight ticket. Successful applicants will benefit from working in an international, world-class, supportive and vibrant research environment. All students will have access to our postgraduate training programme.

申请基础条件:

- Be a Chinese national

- Meet the requirements of the CSC please see their website

- Hold an unconditional offer to study for a PhD at the University of Dundee and meet our English

language requirements

- Have completed Bachelors or Masters degree before the agreed start of PhD study.

申请流程:

Stage 1

Apply to the University of Dundee: Potential applicants should first contact a perspective supervisor and discuss potential PhD projects. Successful candidates will be provided with an unconditional offer from the University of Dundee clarifying that that tuition fees and local research costs will be waived upon gaining a CSC Scholarship. CSC will be issued with a copy of the offer letter.

Stage 2

Apply to The China Scholarship Council (CSC): After receiving the unconditional offer letter from the UoD, candidates must also apply to CSC for funding by completing an application for funding. Please apply to The China Scholarship Council online. Application forms will be available online between March 2023 and April 2023 (dates to be confirmed in due course). Applications are considered on an annual basis and therefore you must apply to the CSC between if you wish to be considered.

Application process:

Stage 1, ie application to UoD, is an easy part. If the candidate and a perspective supervisor are both

happy this becomes almost a formality!

A typical timeline:

- The candidate would contact a perspective supervisor.

- They would hold a chat/Zoom meeting to discuss background, research interests, a potential PhD project, etc.

- If both sides agree, the candidate submits an application to the PhD programme at the University of Dundee. Its a short form, and the Dundee side will help with the application and if any questions.

- UoD will prepare an offer letter.

Entry requirements to Physics:

GPA: Applications to PhD in Physics require the 1st class or upper 2nd class (2:1) degree. British 2:1 is equivalent to 3.2+ GPA (out of 4), and even that is somewhat flexible.

English: As I understand, getting 6.5 in IELTS is not too difficult. After that the candidate has to apply to CSC. All details can be found on their website: http://apply.csc.edu.cn/csc/main/person/login/index.jsf

CSC scholarships are prestigious and as I understand in general are quite competitive. However, Dundee has a special agreement with CSC and is allocated 10 scholarships each year. Importantly, this programme is often undersubscribed. So if the candidate meets CSC requirements, chances of getting a scholarship - with an offer from Dundee - should be quite high!

1) Strong candidates with background in any area of Physics and interest in computational and/or theoretical research are welcome. Previous knowledge of Biology or any of the above mentioned methods is not required. This is absolutely not a problem, as we had seen in many cases in the past. A gentle introduction into Biology for physicists will be offered. I actually teach such course to Physics PhD students across all Scottish Universities.

Most importantly, the candidate must be interested in learning new things and in applying physics and computational/theoretical methods to understand some fundamental biology. We get PhD and Masters students from different disciplines, including Physics, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Computer Sciences, etc. Physics students always easily adjusted within such highly interdisciplinary community, quickly picked up a necessary minimum knowledge of relevant biology, and overall greatly benefited from being a part of the research active environment. Job prospects in this area are quite good. Typical destinations after a PhD: postdoctoral positions in academia and positions in industry - pharmaceutical and biotech companies and data science.

2) A wide range of projects is available in my group from standard MD simulations of particular proteins of interest to method development and theoretical biophysics projects. The best suited project can be selected upon discussion with the candidate depending on his/her background, skills and interests.
