The Buxboim Lab for Mechanobiology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem is now recruiting PhD and postdoctoral fellows for a number of projects . Excellent candidates with  background  in  Biology,  Bioengineering,  Biophysics,  and  related  fields  are encouraged to apply . Research experience in murine animal models or computational biology is an advantage.

Cell nucleus biology: Nuclear lamin genes harbor the largest number of disease-causing mutations owing to their complex cell-type and cell-state specific interactome, which remain undefined. Using designed ankyrin repeat proteins (DARPin) selected against nuclear lamins and lamins’ domains, we seek to elucidate the interaction map of the nuclear lamina and its function. We are interested in delineating lamins’ interactions both with nuclear envelope proteins and chromatin. In this manner, we will develop a novel DARPin-based toolbox that we will implement to study premature and healthy ageing, both in cell culture and in animal models.

Mechanobiology of CNS progenitor cells and regeneration: Stiffening of the stem cell niche in the brain due to ageing or related pathologies attenuates the regenerative capacity of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) to proliferate and differentiate towards functional myelinating cells . We study how altered mechanical inputs affect nuclear lamina organization and perturb lamin-chromatin interactions, and explore strategies for restoring proper regenerative capacity as observed in young animals. This project involves isolation of cells from neonate and aged murine models and genomic assays for mapping lamina associated domains (LADs) .

Applicants  must  have  excellent  English  skills  (writing  and  oral)  and  meet  the requirements of the Hebrew University (IELTS 7/TOEFL 95;http://info.huji.ac.il/en- overseas/China#graduate). Generous research and student scholarships are available.

Background:

Prof. Buxboim completed his Ph.D. at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel, and performed a five-year research at the University of Pennsylvania, PA USA, working on adult stem cell mechanobiology. To date, Buxboim has published 37 articles with an h- index 18, including 15 articles as a principle investigator. The interdisciplinary research of  the  Buxboim  Lab  of  Mechanobiology  is  focused  on  elucidating  regulatory mechanisms  of mechanical  and  physical  microenvironmental  inputs  on  cell-fate decision making processes in different biological systems of interest. The Buxboim Lab is publishing in high impact journals, including PNAS and Developmental Cell.
