In order to help undergraduate freshmen in our university to feel the charm of scientific research and find the direction of future development, the School of Foreign Languages offered the course of Academic English to undergraduate freshemen this semester. Students taking this course made friends with young researchers and got to know their research work. After reading papers and interviewing the researchers, they made a short introduction of the research project their friends did by introducing the researcher, and designing an academic poster introducing the work. We hope this hands-on learning expreience would arouse their research interest and be a good start in learning academic English.
1.Introduction of the project
1.1Researcher
He Haoran, a postgraduate student, major in the College of Aerospace Engineering, NUAA.His research interests include Control system design and overall design of micro aircraft, control system design and overall design of new configuration aircraft.
1.2 The Research Work
Imagine you are in a scene of such an accident. A plane crashed in a steep mountain, but the existing UAV can’t play their part because of the complex landform. So what will happen in this case?
All rescues can only be carried out by humans, which makes search and rescue difficult and time-consuming. This sharply reduces the chances for the victims to survive.
Therefore, a more flexible UAV is needed.And this is what our friend is working on---a fixed-wing aircraft that can take off and land vertically in various terrain.
2. The reporting group
Xu Shengxun：I think this course is exceedingly useful and meaningful.Through this course, I learned the professional knowledge in how to have an academic represent, expand my vocabulary, exercise my speech ability and help me overcome my fear of speaking in front of strangers.More importantly,I learned how to cooperate with teammates and made friends.
Xue Chi：In my opinion, the course of Academic English provides us freshman with an opportunity to contact with researchers and understand the prossess of research. Besides, I understood the importance of teamwork. As a member of the group, I took my duty and tried my best to finish our work. In the end, I learned that I should transfer my mind and develop my skills as many as possible.
Lu Jianling：To do academic work is not easy. But when you are doing what you love, and make progress step by step, you will probably find it not so hard Academic English is useful in presenting research work. And this class gives us a chance to know what the real research is and pushes us forward to find our interest.
Zhao Jiayi: After this semester's course study, I have understood the basic requirements for English academic presentation, what is an academic paper, and how to write an academic paper as a researcher. In the process of getting along with my classmates, I really realized the strength of the team. The team members have the same goals and work hard for a task. When the task is successfully completed, we have a sense of achievement and will be satisfied. In each run in, our relationship is gradually harmonious. I learned a lot from my teachers and classmates. I not only improved my learning ability, but also learned teamwork!
Xu Yang：English learning has been with us all our lives. As a student majoring in science and engineering, we will read English literature in our future study careers. Of course, academic English is important for our lifelong career. This semester's study is very helpful for us to get acquainted with doing research and writing papers.
Shan Yijia：After taking the course of Academic English, I gained a new understanding of popular science articles. Before, I thought popular science articles were very difficult to understand, especially annoying, and there was no context at all. After this course, I thought it was particularly important to analyze the context of the articles, which helped me to read them more concisely and clearly. The teamwork in this course made me understand the importance of cooperation.
Ding Xiaoya:The course of Academic English helped me not only on English, but also train my skills such as analyzing a reserch article and designing PPT slides. I thought I gradually found my interest that might guide my future choice.
