Preparing Your Paper

Structure

Your paper should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion; acknowledgments; declaration of interest statement; references; appendices (as appropriate); table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figures; figure captions (as a list).

Word Limits

Please include a word count for your paper. There are no word limits for papers in this journal.

Style Guidelines

Please refer to these quick style guidelines when preparing your paper, rather than any published articles or a sample copy.

Please use British (-ize) spelling style consistently throughout your manuscript.

Please use single quotation marks, except where ‘a quotation is “within” a quotation’.

Please note that long quotations should be indented without quotation marks.

Punctuation follows UK conventions. Use single quotation marks, except where ‘a quotation is “within” a quotation’. Long quotations should be indented without quotation marks.

Use the vernacular species name from the British List. It can be shortened after first occurrence if no confusion would arise (e.g. Whitethroated Dipper then use Dipper). Shortlegged GroundRoller subsequently contracted to Ground Roller if no confusion but rollers if unspecific – i.e. more than one species or a general term. “Sky Lark” not “Skylark”.

The scientific species name should follow the vernacular on first occurrence even in title unless too clumsy; in italics, no brackets. Blue Tit = Cyanistes caeruleus; Coal Tit = Periparus ater; Marsh Tit = Poecile palustris; Willow Tit = Poecile montanus; House Martin = Delichon urbicum

Numbers: spell out one to ten, then 11, 1000, 10 000, 100 000; Units: spell out the words seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks; Dates are in UK format: 24 October 2013. Use 24-hour clock.
