Development Genes and Evolution

Submission guidelines

Instructions for Authors

Authorship Policy

Authorship should incorporate and should be restricted to those who have contributed substantially to the work in one or more of the following categories:

Conceived of or designed study

Performed research

Analyzed data

Contributed new methods or models

Wrote the paper

Types of papers

Development Genes and Evolution accepts peer-reviewed Original Papers, Short Communications, and Review or Perspective articles. As variations on the Short Communications format, we also welcome specific contributions for Technical Notes and the “Database Corner” (computational analyses of sequencing or imaging data).

Original Papers should present substantial original work and should be organized as detailed below. The length of Original Papers should not exceed ten printed pages (one printed page corresponds to approximately: 800 words of text, or 3 illustrations with their legends, or 40 references).

Short Communications should highlight single experimental results and should be organized like Original Papers, but with a combined results and discussion section. Descriptive developmental data are welcome that contribute to understanding the mechanisms of development, without the need for functional data. The manuscript length should not exceed six printed pages.

Technical Notes should present novel techniques, or substantial improvements of existing techniques, in experimental developmental biology that are of broad interest. They should be organized in the style of Short Communications, but with an extended technical section to explain the new technique in sufficient detail. The length of technical notes should not exceed six printed pages.

"Database Corner" contributions should deal with large datasets such as sequences (genome, transcriptome) and images (e.g., whole mount in situ hybridization, cell tracing and live cell imaging). Manuscripts should include an analysis with a clear focus and conclusion, rather than a simple description of resources. Contributions from all areas of development and evolution are welcome. Manuscripts should be organized in the style of Short Communications.

Reviews should offer a thematic synthesis across a range of primary contributions in the published literature. Integration of classical and modern studies, or of primary data with theories and models, are equally welcome. With rapid methodological advances in the field, there are many opportunities to place new and old observations together into updated and wider contexts. As scholarly resources, reviews should have appropriately detailed bibliographies. While there is not a strict length requirement, review articles are customarily eight to ten pages and supported by multiple display elements (figures and/or tables).

Suggestions for reviews on topical questions in the field of development and evolution are welcome. Please contact the Editor-in-Chief and the Reviews Editor before submission.

Perspectives should be short reviews that discuss a recent finding of interest or hypothesis in the field of evolution and/or development, and put it into the context of previous data and ideas. Contributions in the style of commentaries such as meeting reports are welcome; however, they should go beyond a simple summary and clearly highlight new developments and upcoming research areas. Manuscripts should have a maximum length of 5 printed pages. Schematic illustrations that graphically clarify the text are encouraged.

Manuscript Submission

Submission of a manuscript implies: that the work described has not been published before; that it is not under consideration for publication anywhere else; that its publication has been approved by all co-authors, if any, as well as by the responsible authorities – tacitly or explicitly – at the institute where the work has been carried out. The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.

Permissions

Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) for both the print and online format and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.

Online Submission

Please follow the hyperlink “Submit manuscript” on the right and upload all of your manuscript files following the instructions given on the screen.

Please ensure you provide all relevant editable source files. Failing to submit these source files might cause unnecessary delays in the review and production process.

Microarray Data

Please note that submissions consisting entirely of meta-analyses of non-validated microarray data will not be accepted. Microarray data that are crucial to a hypothesis or conclusion of the submitted manuscript needs to be validated by the author(s).
