Instructions for authors

Submit your manuscripts to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ceoptom.

Strict limitations in terms of the number of words, figures, tables and references apply for each category of submission (see table here). Submitted papers must exhibit a very high standard of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence and paragraph construction. Manuscripts, including references, must be formatted in accordance with these Author Guidelines. Submissions that exceed the limits outlined in the table below, are deficient in English grammar, do not have the manuscript and references formatted correctly, or fail to comply with any other aspect of these Author Guidelines, will be rejected immediately without proceeding to peer review.

Clinical and Experimental Optometry follows the “Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals” of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). The journal is listed by ICMJE as conforming to ICMJE requirements. Authors can obtain additional guidance on good practice in preparation of papers from the ICMJE at http://www.icmje.org/recommendations.

Historical Overview

Review: A Review provides a definitive overview of an important and/or complex topic with reference to the relevant literature. A Review may present results from original work of the author, and sufficient information must be included in respect of the methodology adopted. A Review must contain an unstructured abstract.

Clinical Guidelines and Clinical Standards: Clinical and Experimental Optometry publishes Clinical Guidelines and Clinical Standards for optometric practice, optometric education, the delivery of eye-care services in general or for the management of specific conditions. These submissions must include an unstructured abstract. Usually these are documents prepared and adopted by a peak body such as an optometric association, a government authority or a special interest association that has recognised community standing. Acceptance for publication is subject to editorial assessment of the soundness and appropriateness of the guidelines or standards. Clinical Guidelines and Clinical Standards adopted by a peak body should be authored by the adopting body, although the individual authors of the document can be identified in the text or in acknowledgements. The word “Guideline” or “Standard” should appear in the title. Papers from individuals proposing guidelines or standards that have not been adopted by some peak body should be attributed to individual authors. In the case of very long guidelines that exceed the word, table, figure and reference limits for such submissions outlined in the table above, the full text can be published as a supplement with a shorter version prepared as the published paper.

Systematic Review: A systematic review systematically identifies, selects, appraises and synthesises research evidence relating to a well-defined research question, typically about diagnosis, prognosis, or therapy. A research paper that is a systematic review and/or meta-analyses needs to adhere to the PRISMA Statement ( http://www.prisma-statement.org), or an equivalent reporting guideline (e.g., MOOSE for meta-analyses of observational studies or ENTREQ for synthesis of qualitative research) and include the relevant completed checklist and flow diagram. The Methods section of the paper should state whether a protocol existed for the systematic review, and ideally reference the published protocol or provide a copy of the protocol as supporting information. At a minimum, the systematic review should be prospectively registered (e.g., in PROSPERO: https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/). The registration number should be included in the Methods section of both the Abstract and the main text. For studies that include numerical data and statistical inference, a section should be included in the Methods that clearly describes this methodology.

Scoping Review: The purpose of scoping reviews is to identify knowledge gaps, scope a body of literature, clarify concepts or to investigate research conduct. A scoping review typically addresses a broader research question. A certain amount of 'grey literature' or conference abstracts may be cited; such material would normally not be suitable for inclusion in a systematic review. coping reviews are particularly useful when a body of literature has not yet been comprehensively reviewed, or exhibits a complex or heterogeneous nature not amenable to a more precise systematic review of the evidence. Unlike a systematic review, a scoping review aims to encompass all available evidence regardless of quality, and therefore does not require a formal quality assessment or risk of bias assessment.

Original Research Paper: An Original Research Paper reports on a study conducted by the authors such as a laboratory experiment, clinical trial, or survey; and is considered a primary resource. The format of an Original Research Paper can also be used for reporting a series of related clinical cases. Routine reports of instrument or technique repeatability or instrument comparisons will be assigned a lower priority for publication. A report of a single clinical case should be reported as a Clinical Communication or a Clinical Picture. Full details of the format of an Original Research Papers are given below. An Original Research Paper must contain a structured abstract. To keep within the word limit, authors of papers reporting a complex and/or data rich investigation are encouraged to write a Supplement to the paper. The Supplement can contain a more detailed description of methods, extensive data tables, supplementary figures and appendices. A Supplement is published as submitted and is not reset in journal style. Reference to the Supplement should be made at appropriate places in the text of the main paper. A Supplement can be downloaded by readers along with the main paper if the reader wants access to the more detailed information.
