INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS

The Journal of Children’s Orthopaedics is a peer-reviewed, ‘gold’ open access journal. The journal welcomes high quality articles from authors of all nationalities with a focus on clinical practice, diagnosis and treatment of disorders unique to paediatric orthopaedics, as well as on basic and applied research, helping physicians to stay abreast of the latest and ever-changing developments in the field of paediatric orthopaedics and traumatology.

All submissions undergo double-blind peer review by our panel of expert reviewers.

The Journal of Children’s Orthopaedics is abstracted/indexed in PubMed (with full text in PubMed Central), Google Scholar, SCOPUS and Web of Science. It is included in the main Impact Factor databases (SCIE and SSCI) and has an Impact Factor of 1.075.

Online Submission

All manuscript submissions should be made online at the Journal of Children’s Orthopaedics ScholarOne Manuscripts site: https://mc04.manuscriptcentral.com/jco

If you are submitting an unsolicited manuscript, please read the manuscript guidelines carefully to check that your paper meets the criteria for submission, then click the 'Create Account' link within ScholarOne or – if you have submitted to the journal before –  log into your existing ScholarOne account and follow the on-screen instructions.

If you have been invited to submit a paper to the journal, please click on the link within your invitation email to navigate directly to your ScholarOne Author Centre, where you can enter information about the paper and upload all of your manuscript files.

Manuscript Guidelines

Articles are accepted for exclusive publication in the Journal of Children’s Orthopaedics and must not be previously published or under consideration elsewhere.

We do NOT accept and will withdraw from consideration any manuscript submissions that have been posted to Preprint Servers prior to submission.

The journal accepts the following article types:

Original Clinical Article

Technical Note

Basic Science

Perspective

Systematic Review

Editorial

Letter to the Editor

Response to Letter to the Editor

Book Review

Current Concepts Review (by Editor-in-Chief invitation only)

Please note that the journal does NOT accept Case Reports which will be rejected upon submission without undergoing peer review.

Clinical Trials

All clinical trials must be registered in a public registry prior to submission and the trial registry number must be included in the manuscript and provided on submission. The journal follows the trials registration policy of the ICMJE (http://www.icmje.org/recommendations/browse/publishing-and-editorial-issues/clinical-trial-registration.html) and considers only trials that have been appropriately registered before submission, regardless of when the trial closed to enrolment. Acceptable registries must meet the following ICMJE requirements:

be publicly available, searchable, and open to all prospective registrants

have a validation mechanism for registration data

be managed by a not-for-profit organization

Examples of registries that meet these criteria include:

ClinicalTrials.gov the registry sponsored by the United States National Library of Medicine

the International Standard Randomized Controlled Trial Number Registry

the European Clinical Trials Database

the International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP)

Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) must adhere to the CONSORT statement, (CONsolidated Standards Of Reporting Trials) and submissions must be accompanied by a completed CONSORT checklist (uploaded as a Supplemental File for Review). Further information can be found at www.consort-statement.org.

Authorship

We only accept papers with a maximum of 8 authors (except for multicenter studies with more than 4 centers). Each author is required to complete an ICMJE Conflict of Interest disclosure form prior to submission.

Each author must have contributed significantly to, and be willing to take public responsibility for, one or more aspects of the study: its design, data acquisition, and analysis and interpretation of data. All authors must have been actively involved in the drafting and critical revision of the manuscript, and each must provide final approval of the version to be submitted. Each author’s contribution must be listed on the Title Page.

Any additional contributors associated with the collection of data or production of the manuscript should be thanked in an acknowledgement on the Title Page.

The order of names reflects only the preference of the authors. Any change in authorship (including the order of names and the designation of the corresponding author) after the initial review process necessitates a signed letter, from all authors, agreeing to the change.

The corresponding author provides final approval for publication.

Title page

To ensure anonymity in peer review, the title page should be supplied separately from the body of the article, which should not contain any identifying information. The title page should contain the full title of the manuscript, author name(s) and affiliation(s), and the name, postal and email addresses of the corresponding author as well as a list of each author's individual contribution to the manuscript.

The title page should also contain a summary statement with regard to conflict of interest and funding:

Funding: This study was funded by X (grant number X).

Conflict of Interest: Author A has received research grants from Company A. Author B has received a speaker honorarium from Company X and owns stock in Company Y. Author C is a member of committee Z.

If no conflict exists, the authors should state:

Conflict of Interest: Author A, Author B, and Author C declare that they have no conflict of interest.

Text

The manuscript text should be submitted in Word. Please use continuous line numbering in your main document file (in Word, go to Layout>Line Numbers>Continuous). Please use no more than three levels of headings. Abbreviations should be defined at first mention and used consistently thereafter.

Abstract, running head, classifications and keywords

The abstract should be structured into Purpose, Methods, Results and Conclusions and be limited to a maximum of 250 words.

The running head (or short title) should be a succinct version of the full title and not exceed 50 characters.

Categorise your submission by carefully selecting 1–3 of the classifications listed on the submission form.

Keywords should be based upon 3–5 key terms that might be used when searching for the article online.

Level of Evidence

Level of Evidence must be stated for all Original Clinical Articles, Systematic Reviews and Technical Notes. It is optional for all other article types. Select the Level of Evidence appropriate for your work from the chart below and list this underneath the abstract.
