Guidelines to Authors

General Information: “Himalayan Geology”, is a biannual (January and July) flagship scholarly journal of the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun. It publishes original research contributions covering several aspects of geology, geophysics, sedimentology, palaeontology, stratigraphy, magmatism, metamorphism, collisional tectonics, seismicity, seismogenesis, geomorphology, geological map, glaciology, hydrology, environment, climate change, natural hazards, geotechnical studies, remote sensing, natural resources pertaining to the Himalaya and its adjoining areas. Himalayan Geology also publishes scholarly invited state of art review articles presenting important advances on any of the themes mentioned above to facilitate communication among scientists from a broad range of disciplines as well as interest to international readership. The journal encourages scholarly articles based on extensive field-based studies, experimental results, geophysical investigations, theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and novel ideas; to propagate science in understanding some fundamental issues related to following Key- or Index-words: climate record, cryosphere, geochemistry, geodesy, geodynamics, geophysics, magmatism, magnetism & mineral physics, geomorphology, biodiversity, palaeontology, petrology, remote sensing and GIS, seismology, soil system science, structural geology, volcanology and geo-archaeology.

The average length of a paper including figures and tables should not exceed 20 printed pages. Short communications including Discussion, Comments and Replies on papers, which have appeared in a recent issue of Himalayan Geology, are welcome. They should normally not exceed two printed pages. All contributions are subject to the normal review procedure. Authors may provide names and email addresses of three reviewers to aid the editors in their selection. Acceptance of a manuscript is decided after the receipt of its final version along with tables and good quality figures. The scientific content of the papers will be the sole responsibility of the authors.

Submission of an article to Himalayan Geology is understood to imply that it has not been published on paper or electronically, that it has not been simultaneously submitted for publication elsewhere, and that the author agrees to transfer the copyright to Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology.

Manuscripts preparation : Electronic copy of manuscripts (in journal format) should be submitted on A4 size (297 x 210 mm) in ‘MSWORD’. Manuscripts are to be written in English in a simple style. Care should be taken to avoid long and complicated sentences and unnecessary jargon. The text is to be organized as Abstract, Introduction, Methodology, Main body including Data, Results and Interpretations, Discussion, Summary and or Conclusions, Acknowledgments and References. The length of the abstract should be limited to 250 words. It should summarize the results rather than contents of the paper and should include all new taxonomic names. Citation of literature in the abstract is discouraged. The headings and subheadings should be numbered hierarchically (such as 1/ 1.1/ 1.1.1 etc.). This numbering serves as an aid in editorial process and is deleted in the final layout. The text should be in one and half-spaced with 30 mm margin on each side. Only names of genera and species are to be set in italics. Foot notes are not allowed.

Literature citations in the text should be formatted as follows : Author (1990: 525) or (Author 1990 : 525). Two author are linked by “&”: Author & Author (1990 : fig. 2). Three or more authors are abbreviated by “et al.” after the first author : Author et al. (1990). References are separated by a semi colon “;”and year by a coma “,” : Author 1990; Author 1995, 1996). Citations of figures, plates and tables are written in small letters : (Author 1990: 56, pl. 4, fig. 5) or (Author 1990 : 56, text-fig. 4, tab.4). Note that there is no coma between authors name and year of publication.

All pages of scripts, including references and explanations of illustrations, should be numbered consecutively. Papers on palaeontology must strictly follow the most recent issues of the International Codes of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) and Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN). In making any stratigraphical changes or erecting new stratigraphic terms the International Stratigraphic guidelines should be followed. As per the recommendations of ICZN and ICBN, all illustrated and described fossils must be registered and deposited in an appropriate permanent institution. The register number and the name of the repository must be quoted.

Illustrations : Illustrations must be submitted camera-ready for copying and they should be numbered in the same sequence that they appear in the text. When designing figures, tables and plates it is important to keep the maximum size of the printed illustration in mind (full page format : 230 mm high and 180 mm wide in two columns, single column format : 230 mm high and 85 mm wide). So potential reduction of illustrations is to be kept in mind especially with regard to lettering. After reduction to column or page size, the smallest letters should be at least 8 pt). All figures, tables and plates are referred to in the text with capitalized abbreviations like Fig. 1, Table 2 or Plate 3. A scale bar should accompany line drawings as well as photographs of specimen; its length is to be indicated in the figure-caption. Fold-out tables are not acceptable. If a table of larger than page size is essential, it should be arranged for two facing pages. Fold-out maps, and colour plates may be considered for inclusion only if essential - for both a contribution towards the extra cost involved will be expected from the author.

The author should retain original illustrations until the manuscript is accepted. Review copies must include high-quality photographs of halftone illustrations; photocopies are acceptable only for line drawings. Digital versions of line drawings are encouraged (in cdr/tiff) but they should be accompanied with high quality laser printouts. Each plate and photographic figure should be protected by an overlay attached along the upper edge.

References: The authors are organized in alphabetical and chronological order, every author separated by coma “,”. References by the same author, published in the same year should be distinguished by the use of suffixes : 1999a, 1999b, 1999c. All author names are set in small letters. Publication/journal name are given in full title/name. Volume numbers are printed in bold and issue numbers are given in parenthesis followed by a coma and page numbers. Examples:

Author, A. 1998. Title of paper. Full name of journal, 11 (2) 205-221.

Author, B., Author, C., Author, D. 1999. Title of paper. Full name of journal, 32, 295-300.

Author, A. 1999. Title of book. Name of Publisher, place of publication, 280p.

Author, A. 1999. Title of contribution. In: Editor, A. (ed.), Title of book. Name of Publisher, place of publication,150p.

Author, A., Author, B. 2000. Title of contribution. In: Editor, A. & Editor, B. (eds.), Title of book. Name of Publisher, place of publication,150p.

Electronic version of manuscript : After the acceptance of a paper the authors are required to submit an electronic version of their manuscript in MS-Word for Windows. The electronic text may be formatted as follows: use 10 pt Times New Roman font, justify margins only, do not hyphenate words, set generic and specific names of taxa in italics. Number headings and subheadings hierarchically (such as 1/ 1.1/ 1.1.1 etc.) and do not underline them or set in bold/italic. All author names in text as well as list of references are set in small letters.

Cover Photographs : High quality photograph (TIFF file on min 400 resolution) related to the submitted manuscript is welcome for use on the cover page.

Publication time : Currently the time between initial submission and publication of regular articles is about 1 year. Articles accepted for publication are generally published in order of submission. Exceptions can be made for papers of high scientific significance.

Reprints : PDF file of published article will be provided free of cost to authors.
