Instructions for Authors

GENERAL

The primary purpose of the ASAIO Journal is to act as a source of information, usable by those caring for patients with the need for organ replacement by artificial means and/or those at the forefront of research and development in the field.

Although one of our primary aims is to assist the practitioner in his/her care of such patients, and to afford access to information which may improve such patients’ care, it is the Editors’ wish to function as a forum for that information which, while still experimental, may shed light upon current thinking of those active in the fields appropriate to the aims of The American Society for Artificial Internal Organs and the ASAIO Journal. To this end, original contributions are welcomed in areas of basic and applied, as well as clinical investigation.

Contact Information

For additional information and questions, please, check the ASAIO Journal website or contact Michelle Gaffney, Managing Editor, ASAIO Editorial Office. Voice 443-685-5413, Fax 4103211456, Email: asaio.journal@gmail.com.

PREPARATION AND SUBMISSION

Manuscripts that do not comply with formatting requirements and length limits will be returned to the authors.

All manuscript material must be submitted electronically through the Editorial Manager website. Manuscript text and tables must be readable by Microsoft Word (txt-, doc-, docx-, or rtf-files, but cannot be graphic images or pdf-files). For general electronic manuscript preparation guidelines, please, refer to the on-line resources of the Chicago Manual of Style. Doublespace all parts including tables and reference lists, using a standard sized typeface (preferably Arial 12 point) and margins of one inch. Use page numbers. Organize main text of original contributions as Title, Abstract, Introduction, Materials & Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgment and Appendix sections. Figures for reproduction must be submitted in high resolution as separate tif- or eps-files (see below). Statistical methods must be identified. Priority claims are discouraged.

Manuscript meta-data such as type of article, title (limit 140 characters), authors (names and e-mail addresses), institutional affiliations, corresponding address, funding information, suggested manuscript section, abstract (limit 250 words), keywords from classification terms, copyright, and conflict of interest are collected with the electronic submission.

To increase discoverability of your article after publication, we suggest the following:

- Make the article title as succinct as possible; Google Scholar prefers titles with 7 words or fewer.

- Test keywords in Google Scholar (refer to "searches related to" at the bottom of the page for which keywords come up more often).

-Include article keywords in the title, as well as in the first 100 words of the Abstract.

A cover letter indicating that the authors are submitting the manuscript for peer review and possible publication in the ASAIO Journal, must be submitted with the manuscript.

Title Page (submit as separate document):

Include the title, full author list, institutional affiliations, short title, keywords, Conflict of Interest and Source of Funding Statement, and corresponding author contact information. Note that author names should be formatted as First Name, Middle initial (if any), Last Name.

Any other format will result in incorrect indexing in PubMed.

Include in the manuscript text file:

Abstract

The abstract should be unstructured. Limit 200 words. It should summarize relevant information in the manuscript and provide quantitative information, if possible.

Abbreviations

Use standard abbreviations and units as recommended in the Style Manual for Biological Journals.

Drug Names

Generic names should be used. Proprietary names may be given (parenthetically) with the first use of the generic name.

References

If possible use bibliography software such as EndNote or Reference Manager and the proper style files.

Citation in Text: References should be cited consecutively in the text as superscript numbers (Note: outside periods, commas, and quote marks; inside colons and semicolons).

Reference List: References should be listed in the numerical order in which they are first cited in the text. The style of reference is that of PMC Journals, including endpage and volume number but omitting number and month of issue. If there are six or fewer authors, list all; if over six, list first three. Accuracy of references is the responsibility of the author(s) and should be carefully rechecked before submission.

Journal Articles: Vitinghus E, Mogensen CE: Graded exercise and protein excretion in diabetic man and the effect of insulin treatment. Kidney Int 21: 725–729, 1982.

Books: Brownlee M (ed): Diabetes Mellitus. New York, Garland STMP Press, 1981.

Articles in Books: Kohner EM: Assessment and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, in Brownlee M(ed), Diabetes Mellitus, New York, Garland STMP Press, 1981, pp. 117–212.

Articles in press must state name of journal and, if possible, volume and year.

Digital Artwork

Figures must be submitted as either tif- (tagged image format) or eps- (encapsulated postscript) files. For electronic figure preparation guidelines, please, refer to the on-line resources of the Chicago Manual of Style. For vector graphics, the preferred format is eps; for halftones, please use tif-format. Vector graphics containing fonts must have the fonts embedded in the files. If possible, use black and white graphic with no shading. Do not use faint lines and/or lettering and check that all lines and lettering within the figures are legible at final size. All lines should be at least 0.1 mm (0.3 pt) wide. Color images must be created/scanned, saved and submitted as CMYK files (extra cost for color print).

Resolution should be set to 300 dpi for photographs, micrographs and scanned images; 1200 dpi for diagrams, scanned line drawings and line drawings in bitmap formats. Please note that artwork downloaded from the Internet (jpeg-, gif-, or pdf- files) cannot be used. Do not embed figures in the manuscript document.

Mathematical Expressions

For general electronic math preparation guidelines, please, refer to the on-line resources of the Chicago Manual of Style. Number display equations in the order of their appearance.

Acknowledgement Permissions

Grantors may be listed. Any persons listed by name in the Acknowledgements section must provide permission stating that they approve of the mention of their names in the paper. Permissions should be emailed directly from the acknowledged individuals to the editorial office. Forwarded emails are not acceptable.

Tables (separate from manuscript file)

Tables should be typed double spaced on separate sheets, with numbers (Roman) and titles. For electronic table preparation guidelines, please, refer to the on-line resources of the Chicago Manual of Style. Symbols for units should be confined to column headings. Abbreviations should be kept to a minimum, and those used, must be explained in the table caption.

Tables must be submitted separately from the manuscript Word document, and each table in its own Word document.
