Guide for Authors

INTRODUCTION

Types of article

Natural Discovery:

The natural history of organisms and the environment they embedded has long been known as the foundation of ecology, evolution, and biological conservation. However, the scientific publication of such traditional discipline has been largely overlooked as journals increasingly prefer to prioritize data-driven research rather than observations-based descriptive discoveries. In fact, natural discoveries, which based on the descriptive and novel observations, often inspiring biologists to improve their understanding of the ecology and biology of organisms in the context of intensifying human activities and environmental changes. Importantly, natural discoveries could provide great starting point for further theoretical and/or empirical studies. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in scientific natural discoveries and a broad range of issues discussed. The editorial boards of Watershed Ecology and the Environment have actually always been pleased to consider the above-mentioned works focusing on natural history observations and discoveries. Therefore, we now are launching a new paper type called "Natural Discovery".

This series is intended to attract our readers by showcasing the novel natural discovery from individual to watershed ecosystems (i.e., organisms' novel behavior and morphology, interesting life history, and novel ecosystem/organism in responses to global/regional environmental changes, etc.) in the changing worlds. All the interesting phenomena or important findings that occur in all types of ecosystems related to the watershed (e.g., river ecosystem, lake ecosystem, riverine wetlands, estuarine delta, etc.) under the changing environment, especially from long-term ecological or environmental observations in the field, we are pleased to publish them in this new paper type. It should be different from research article in that "Natural Discovery" paper use high-resolution pictures and photos accompanied by a short essay/description to present a novel idea or main findings in the main body text, but it should be same with research article in other section, including title, author lists and affiliations, abstract, keywords, subheading, conclusions, acknowledgements and references. The writing should also be of high quality to appeal to both a scientific as well as an educated, non-scientific audience. Submissions will be reviewed based on their contribution to our understanding of the natural world, equal consideration of the scientific interest and writing quality of the accompanying essay, and the artistic quality and ecological significance of the photos. Only original pictures and photos taken by the co-authors, accompanied by novel ideas and opinions, are acceptable.

Types of article

Policy Forums:

Environmental and ecological policies at global, national and regional scales, as effective implementation tools, usually play an important role in the conservation, restoration and management of ecosystems. Therefore, how to scientifically evaluate the implementation effectiveness of current environmental/ecological policies, and optimize the objectives of these policies to adapt to the rapidly changing world, have also become important issues of common concern to the ecologists, environmentalists, conservation biologists, and policy-makers around the world. The editorial boards of Watershed Ecology and the Environment have actually always been pleased to consider these policy-related works in our new paper type - "Policy Forums".

Submissions up to 6000 words (the word count is inclusive of all parts of the main manuscript, including the title pages, abstract, keywords, main text, references, table and figure legends, but excluding files uploaded as Appendix or Supporting Information) in length are welcome on a wide range of subjects relating to policy directions, decision-making and implementation. Articles in this column should be set within a broad policy context and relate to the wider environmental/ecological issues (raised from watershed ecosystems) around constrained decision making. The focus of these articles should be on informing and improving policy, rather than critiques, and any opinions should be supported by a clear evidence base. Articles should be written in essay format with the subject headings selected according to the content of the manuscript. The abstract, author contributions, data availability statement, declaration of interest and references sections should be formatted according to manuscript specifications.

Perspectives and Trends:

Perspectives and Trends articles, which update recent topics of interest and scientific debate in science of watershed ecology and the environment, are generally shorter than research or review articles. These articles provide an opportunity to propose new conceptual frameworks or personal viewpoints, supported by evidences, but still not completely explored. Preference will be given to articles that provide novel links between fields, stimulate debate and/or suggest new research directions. Perspectives and Trends do not generally contain new data obtained from experiments or models. Submissions in this series are usually up to 5000 words (the word count is inclusive of main body of the manuscript, including the title pages, abstract, keywords and main text, but excluding text in references, boxes, table and figure legends), with up to 300-words abstract, 2 boxes (maximum 400 words per box), 8 keywords, 5 tables or figures and 60 references. Submission to "Perspectives and Trends" from both of experts and others working outside academia are welcomed.

Ethics in publishing

Please see our information on Ethics in publishing.

Declaration of interest

All authors must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organizations that could inappropriately influence (bias) their work. Examples of potential conflicts of interest include employment, consultancies, stock ownership, honoraria, paid expert testimony, patent applications/registrations, and grants or other funding. Authors should complete the declaration of interest statement using this template and upload to the submission system at the Attach/Upload Files step. Note: Please do not convert the .docx template to another file type. Author signatures are not required. If there are no interests to declare, please choose: 'Declarations of interest: none' in the template. More information.

Submission declaration

Submission of an article implies that the work described has not been published previously (except in the form of an abstract, a published lecture or academic thesis, see 'Multiple, redundant or concurrent publication' for more information), that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its publication is approved by all authors and tacitly or explicitly by the responsible authorities where the work was carried out, and that, if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, including electronically without the written consent of the copyright-holder.

Use of inclusive language

Inclusive language acknowledges diversity, conveys respect to all people, is sensitive to differences, and promotes equal opportunities. Content should make no assumptions about the beliefs or commitments of any reader; contain nothing which might imply that one individual is superior to another on the grounds of age, gender, race, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, disability or health condition; and use inclusive language throughout. Authors should ensure that writing is free from bias, stereotypes, slang, reference to dominant culture and/or cultural assumptions. We advise to seek gender neutrality by using plural nouns ("clinicians, patients/clients") as default/wherever possible to avoid using "he, she," or "he/she." We recommend avoiding the use of descriptors that refer to personal attributes such as age, gender, race, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, disability or health condition unless they are relevant and valid. These guidelines are meant as a point of reference to help identify appropriate language but are by no means exhaustive or definitive.

Changes to authorship

Authors are expected to consider carefully the list and order of authors before submitting their manuscript and provide the definitive list of authors at the time of the original submission. Any addition, deletion or rearrangement of author names in the authorship list should be made only before the manuscript has been accepted and only if approved by the journal Editor. To request such a change, the Editor must receive the following from the corresponding author: (a) the reason for the change in author list and (b) written confirmation (e-mail, letter) from all authors that they agree with the addition, removal or rearrangement. In the case of addition or removal of authors, this includes confirmation from the author being added or removed.

Only in exceptional circumstances will the Editor consider the addition, deletion or rearrangement of authors after the manuscript has been accepted. While the Editor considers the request, publication of the manuscript will be suspended. If the manuscript has already been published in an online issue, any requests approved by the Editor will result in a corrigendum.

Copyright

Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to complete a 'Journal Publishing Agreement'. Acceptance of the agreement will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. An e-mail will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript together with a 'Journal Publishing Agreement' form or a link to the online version of this agreement.
