JOURNAL OF OPTICAL COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKING

Guide Overview

About This Resource

Communication of original research results may be one of the most important components of the scientific enterprise. When researchers publish their results as a journal article, the content becomes a valuable and lasting reference for the scientific community.

For many authors, however, aspects of the publication process might be unfamiliar. We created this guide to support our author community, particularly early career authors, by providing a detailed overview of the steps in a scholarly article’s lifecycle. The advice included here will cover taking the story of your research from the lab to the manuscript, all the way through to publication and beyond, with an emphasis on scholarly publishing ethics and best practices.

Each module listed in the menu to the left provides general information about the topic as well as specific information about Optica Publishing Group journals, processes, and policies. Section 14 contains links to all of the Optica Publishing Group resources cited in each module, as well as links to references that support the best practices described throughout the course.

Article Types

Before submitting to a journal, before even preparing a manuscript for submission, you should familiarize yourself with the various article types and determine which type best fits the results you want to communicate.

Most scientific articles published are original research (including both full-length and short reports/Letters), Reviews, Case Studies, or Methodologies. However, there are several other types of less-commonly published papers, and there can be a wide variety of names used for the same article types.

This section will describe many of the common types of articles and their purpose, and identify which types of articles may be considered for publication in Optica Publishing Group journals.

Original Research Article Types

Original research can be presented in several different formats.  When deciding which is most appropriate, consider the benefits of full, comprehensive presentation, significance of the result, and the importance of rapid dissemination.

Regular Articles

Regular Articles are the most common type of journal article.

Other names include Original Article, Regular Article, Research Article, Research, or simply Article, depending on the journal

Regular articles provide a full report of the data and findings from the research.

They generally include an Abstract as well as Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion sections.

Most Optica Publishing Group journals consider full-length research articles.  The exceptions are Advances in Optics and Photonics and Optics Letters.

Conference Proceedings

Conference Proceedings are distinct publications comprising papers and/or posters that were presented at a specific conference or meeting.

In many fields, Conference Proceedings are published as supplements to journals.

Optica Publishing Group journals do not publish proceedings, but our policy on expanded conference papers is here.

Our journals often publish special issues of expanded conference papers that are tied to technical meetings.

Short Reports/Communications/Letters

Short Reports/Communications/Letters are brief, definitive, and timely reports of findings of high impact and significance.

These articles describe observations of immediate impact that may initiate new avenues of research, provide compelling new data on controversies of broad interest and long-standing questions, or present a concise conceptual advance.

This format is useful for researchers with results that are time sensitive (for example, those in highly competitive or quickly changing disciplines).

In some fields, Short Reports/Letters allow authors to present opinions in response to articles previously published in the journal.

Optics Letters and Optica are Optica Publishing Group’s main outlets for Letters papers, but short articles are considered in most of our other journals.

Other Ways to Present Original Research

There are several other styles of manuscript that present original research.  This is not an exhaustive list:

Memoranda

Memoranda are succinct announcements of particularly exciting breakthroughs and innovations that should be quickly disseminated to the scientific community.

Memoranda are exclusive to Optica.

Negative Results

Negative Results are well-documented original research whose results do not agree with what the authors originally hypothesized.

Negative Results might also be the outcome of attempting to reproduce or replicate the results of other research study.

OSA Continuum particularly welcomes Negative Results.

Reproducibility/Replicability Studies

Reproducibility is often defined as obtaining consistent results using the same data and code as an original study, while replicability is obtaining consistent results using the same methodology as the original study with new data.

These articles document the ease or challenges of reproducing or replicating the results of another research study, such as assessing whether the methods and materials were described sufficiently.

OSA Continuum particularly welcomes Reproducibility/Replicability Studies.
