ACM Transactions on Computing Education
Author Guidelines
Manuscript Submission
All manuscripts and revisions are to be submitted electronically using ACM's Manuscript Central interface.
Manuscript Formatting
Submissions should follow the Online Guidelines for Electronically Submitting Articles to ACM Journals. Provided in these guidelines are article templates for both LaTeX and Word. Please download the template in your chosen format, which includes specific advice and guidelines for formatting your paper properly. In addition, TOCE provides customized templates (see next section) for our recommended reporting standard. We encourage you to use one of these custom templates as a starting point for your paper. Manuscripts not formatted according to the ACM Guidelines will be returned to their authors with a request to reformat the paper, thus delaying their review by at least one month.
JARS Reporting Standard
ACM TOCE publishes a diversity of articles on computing education. Most TOCE articles present empirical studies that report scientific evidence. To help authors, reviewers and readers understand the context of and evidence gathered in such studies, we encourage, but do not require, papers to use the APA Journal Article Reporting Standards (JARS). JARS provides standardized section headers, guidelines to promote consistency and clarity in reporting, and recommendations to aid both authors and reviewers. JARS applies to a wide variety of study types, broadly classified as quantitative, qualitative, and mixed designs.
Custom JARS Templates
To aid authors in applying the reporting guidelines to their papers, TOCE has created a set of custom templates for the three primary study types (quantitative, qualitative, and mixed) covered by JARS. We provide JARS templates for both LaTeX and Microsoft Word:
LaTex
LaTeX Quantitative Template
LaTeX Qualitative Template
LaTeX Mixed Template
Microsoft Word
Word Quantitative Template
Word Qualitative Template
Word Mixed Template
We recommend that you download the template that is the best match for your paper type and word processing preference, and then use the template as a starting point for your paper. (Note: You should still download ACM’s LaTeX or Word template and reference it as you write your paper. The ACM templates contain detailed advice and guidelines on a range of specific formatting issues not covered in the JARS templates. See below in the Templates section). Even if your paper is not a good match for the JARS, using a JARS template as a starting point for your paper can help make your paper more accessible to reviewers and the TOCE audience.
Page Limitations
While there is no formal page limit for TOCE articles, we expect most submissions to be between 10 and 25 journal pages. Submissions that exceed 30 pages must have good reasons to do so. If your paper is near or above 30 pages, please think carefully about why it is as long as it is, and consider ways to reduce its length. In many cases, shortening a paper will have no ill-effects and may well improve the paper's clarity and presentation.
