Guide for Authors
Applied Thermal Engineering publishes Original Research Articles, Review Articles, Vision Articles, Short Communications and Letters to the Editor.
Types of contribution
Original Research Articles are original, high-quality and high-impact papers presenting novel research findings. The submission of multipart or serial articles is discouraged, and the Editors reserve the right to require authors to combine such submissions into a single article.
Review Articles are comprehensive overviews of relevant research in a specific area or topic that has experienced significant development or progress in recent years. Reviews should include a critical presentation of the state-of-the-art, and are expected to extend well beyond summarizing the literature by discussing underpinning principles or concepts; presenting issues, approaches or methods; current research gaps, challenges and opportunities; and potential future developments in the field, amongst other. Review Articles are not expected to contain unpublished material. Review Articles are invited by the Editors after approval of a short proposal. Authors who wish to submit (or suggest) a Review Article are asked to complete the proposal form, which is available below, and to submit this to the Editor-in-Chief and Deputy Editor-in-Chief for evaluation. If the proposal is approved, the authors will then be invited to submit a full Review Article, which will be considered for publication through the normal peer-review process. Review Articles should not normally exceed 15,000 words. Longer submissions can be considered by the Editors if this is deemed appropriate.

Vision Articles are intended as springboards for the proposal and discussion of future research directions. Vision Articles can contain presentations of the state-of-the-art and challenges to be overcome in selected research areas, based upon which, authors can suggest promising future research trends, important research questions to be addressed, and areas to be explored. Vision Articles are invited by the Editors after approval of a short proposal. Authors who wish to submit (or suggest) a Vision Article are asked to send their proposal (title, abstract and description) to the Editor-in-Chief and Deputy Editor-in-Chief for evaluation. If the proposal is approved, the authors will then be invited to submit the full Vision Article, which will be considered for publication through the normal peer-review process. Vision Articles should not normally exceed 3,000-5,000 words (6-8 pages).
Short Communications are aimed at the rapid dissemination of recent research, and are more focused than Original Research Articles, without the completeness expected of a full-length research paper. Short Communications should not normally exceed 5000-7000 words (8-10 pages).
Letters to the Editor: All other types of contributions which do not belong to the above categories should be submitted as Letters to the Editor, including commentaries discussing articles published previously in Applied Thermal Engineering, news items, etc.
Manuscript length: All manuscripts submitted to Applied Thermal Engineering are expected to communicate information clearly and concisely. The Editors reserve the right to require authors to adjust the length of their submissions to improve the readability and focus of published articles. If authors have difficulty working within the aforementioned guidelines, they are encouraged to contact the Editor-in-Chief.
