Anatomical Science International

Submission guidelines

Instructions for Authors

Aims and Scope

Anatomical Science International (formerly titled Kaibogaku Zasshi) is the official English journal of the Japanese Association of Anatomists and publishes original research articles dealing with morphological sciences in animals, with a primary focus on humans and other mammals (although exceptions may be considered by the editor for other animals).

In addition to Original Research Articles on molecular, cellular, histological and gross anatomical studies on humans and on normal and experimental animals, as well as functional morphological, biochemical, physiological and behavioral studies if they include morphological analysis, the journal welcomes:

- Case Reports on gross anatomy, highlighting anatomically important data that analyze the process of morphogenesis. Reports merely describing variations will not be accepted

- Methods papers, describing new and useful techniques and their application in the above fields

- Review papers, which are usually invited by the Editors

- Miscellaneous items such as letters to the editor, essays, book reviews, and commentaries

Acceptance

The acceptance criteria for all papers are the quality and originality of the research and its significance to our readership. Except where otherwise stated, manuscripts are peer reviewed by two anonymous reviewers and the Editor. The Editorial Board reserves the right to refuse any material for publication and advises that authors should retain copies of submitted manuscripts and correspondence. Final acceptance or rejection rests with the Editorial Board.

Certification Form

A copy of the certification form, which is available at the download below, must be submitted to the journal’s editorial office by uploading it as a PDF via Editorial Manager. IMPORTANT: Upon receipt of Certification for Manuscript Submission, manuscripts are officially recognized as submissions.

Submission of Manuscripts

All articles submitted to the journal must comply with these instructions. Failure to do so will result in return of the manuscript and possible delay in publication. Manuscripts should be written so that they are intelligible to the professional reader who is not a specialist in the particular field. Where contributions are judged as acceptable for publication on the basis of scientific content, the Editor or the Publisher reserves the right to modify typescripts to eliminate ambiguity and repetition and improve communication between author and reader. If extensive alterations are required, the manuscript will be returned to the author for revision.

Manuscripts must be submitted online at http://www.editorialmanager.com/ansi . Electronic submission substantially reduces the editorial processing and reviewing times and shortens overall publication times. Please follow the hyperlink "Submit online" on the right and upload all of your manuscript files following the instructions given on the screen.

Digital figures must be submitted in one of following formats: JPEG, TIFF, PDF or EPS. MS Office files are also acceptable. Halftone illustration requires a resolution of at least 300 dpi. Digital images supplied only as low-resolution files cannot be used.

Prerequisites for Publication

Papers are accepted for publication in the journal on the understanding that the content has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. This must be stated in the form of prerequisites for publication. This must contain an acknowledgment that all authors have contributed significantly, and that all authors are in agreement with the content of the manuscript. In keeping with the latest guidelines of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, each author's contribution to the paper is to be quantified.

Declarations

Authors should disclose and declare compliance with ethical standards. Detailed explanations and examples are shown in the section of Compliance with Ethical Standards.

Manuscripts submitted for publication must contain a statement to the effect that all human studies have been approved by the appropriate ethics committee and have therefore been performed in accordance with the ethical standards laid down in the 1964 Declaration of Helsinki and all subsequent revisions.

All investigations on human subjects must include a statement that the subject gave informed consent and patient anonymity must be preserved.

Any experiments involving the use of human embryonic stem cells and ooctyes must have been undertaken according to the legislation and ethical guidelines of the country in which the research was undertaken and have received the appropriate legislative and ethics approval to conduct the research.

Experiments using animals must adhere to internationally accepted guidelines for the use of animals in research. The purpose of the experiments must have been to obtain significant scientific information relevant to humans or other animals. Authors must declare whether or not prior approval for experiments was obtained from an animal experimentation ethics committee, animal care and use committee, equivalent committee or relevant body in the country of question. The name of the committee or relevant body must be included.

The use of wild animals for research must comply with relevant national regulations. Animals should not be taken from natural habitats unless animals bred in captivity are unavailable or unsuitable for the scientific purpose. Authors from Japan are particularly referred to the Wildlife Protection and Hunting Law and the Law for the Conservation of Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna.

Papers from countries where such committees are not established, or if such evidence is not provided, will be considered in the light of the Japanese national guidelines.

Anatomical Science International retains the right to reject any manuscript on the basis of unethical conduct of human, human embryo or animal studies.

Authors should declare any financial support or relationships that may pose conflict of interest.
