General remarks
Title page
The biological system studied must be indicated in the title [in vivo/in vitro, humans/animal species, cell line(s), etc.]
Abstract
It is essential that the abstract contain a brief justification for the study. The biological system studied must be clearly indicated, and applied doses/concentrations of the test compound(s) must be specified. Failure to comply with these essentials in toxicology will result in the immediate rejection of the manuscript.
Text
In order to comply with Archives of Toxicology’s high quality standards, the following criteria are essential for original articles:
In the introduction the justification for the study must be clearly explained, and its relevance for toxicology must be clear. It is not sufficient to state that the study was conducted simply because it had never been done before.
In the methodological section (Materials and Methods) the scientific procedure must be described in a way that, in principle, would allow others to reproduce the study. The doses/concentrations of test compound(s) must be clearly specified, and a straightforward justification of the dose selection must be provided. If authors perform their experiments according to standard operation procedures (SOPs) or protocols that are more detailed than the conventional Material and Methods section, they are encouraged to publish the SOPs or protocols as electronic supplements.
The Introduction and Discussion sections must make the essential points, must be concise and avoid repetitions.
Authors should use the option of including Electronic Supplementary Material. Doing so allows them to limit the length of the manuscript and make it more appealing to potential readers without sacrificing scientific information. Authors are encouraged to make the raw data available in an electronic supplement.
If genome-wide data is presented, the raw data must be publicly available.
The study design must be clear, including the number and type of replicas. Please clearly specify whether or not the results were reproduced in independent experiments. At least three independent experiments are required.
Types of papers
Short reportsShort reports on new results of special interest will be published out of turn as Short communications and will be given top priority in the editorial and production process. Short communications should normally not exceed 2 printed pages (= 1,000 words), including tables, etc. The editors reserve the right to decide what constitutes a Short communication.
Editorials - please note: no Abstract required

Opinion Letters / EditorialsThe Archives of Toxicology would like to officially invite our readers to submit letters and guest editorials to our journal. Authors are free to present their opinions on articles recently published in our journal or those published in other journals that would be of general interest to our readers. Moreover, comments on general topics relevant to toxicology are welcome, such as legislation or funding policy. Letters and guest editorials represent personal opinion and will therefore not be peer-reviewed. Nevertheless, the editorial board ask that the submissions adhere to the following standards:- They should be sound, scientifically-founded and of general interest- Critical contributions are welcome; however, ad hominem reasoning must be avoided.- They should be no more than 1 printed page long, without an abstract, figures or tables. We accept a maximum of three references, and ask for short affiliations only (institute and country, no address). If a letter or guest editorial addresses an article published in our journal, the corresponding author of that article will be invited to contribute a response letter. If the response is received within four weeks after the invitation is made, both the original opinion piece and the response letter will be published back to back in the same issue. If however, the response is received later than the allotted four weeks, it will be published as soon as it is technically feasible in a subsequent issue. Eventually, a second round of discussion (letter and response letter) may be arranged if all relevant arguments were not brought forward in the first round.
Special Issues
• Contributions that are part of a Special Issue must include the following footnote on the title page:
"This article is published as part of the Special Issue on [title of the Special Issue]"
