Instructions for authors

About the journal

Acta Oncologica provides a forum for the exchange of information on etiology, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and course of cancer and integrates translational and clinical cancer research. Please see the journal’s Aims & Scope for information about its focus. The journal appears monthly with free Open Access after 6 months and publishes manuscripts across all cancer types.

Submissions are evaluated by the Editorial board within one week. Manuscripts found suitable will be single-blind peer-reviewed by international, independent, anonymous expert referees. Find out more about what to expect during peer review and read our guidance on publishing ethics. The acceptance rate is approximately 25%.

Editorial handling and publication follow the journal categories:

Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention

Molecular Cancer Biology, Tumor Immunology and Diagnostics

Medical Oncology and Precision Medicine

Radiophysics and Radiotherapy

Survivorship, Rehabilitation and Late Effects

With the exception of editorials, the Editor-in-Chief and Editors of Acta Oncologica recuse themselves from the peer-review process of any articles in which they are co-authors. In these instances, the peer review process of such articles will be overseen by an independent Editorial Board member to allow for an impartial decision to be made.

Acta Oncologica adheres to publication best practices as detailed in the Committee On Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines.

Open Access

You have the option to publish open access in this journal via our Open Select publishing program. Publishing open access means that your article will be free to access online immediately on publication, increasing the visibility, readership and impact of your research. Articles published Open Select with Taylor & Francis typically receive 32% more citations* and over 6 times as many downloads** compared to those that are not published Open Select.

Your research funder or your institution may require you to publish your article open access. Visit our Author Services website to find out more about open access policies and how you can comply with these.

You will be asked to pay an article publishing charge (APC) to make your article open access and this cost can often be covered by your institution or funder. Use our APC finder to view the APC for this journal.

Please visit our Author Services website or contact openaccess@tandf.co.uk if you would like more information about our Open Select Program.

*Citations received up to Jan 31st 2020 for articles published in 2015-2019 in journals listed in Web of Science®.

**Usage in 2017-2019 for articles published in 2015-2019.

Preparing your manuscript

All authors submitting to medicine, biomedicine, health sciences, allied and public health journals should conform to the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals, prepared by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).

Acta Oncologica endorses the use of an appropriate reporting guideline when writing manuscripts. You can find the most commonly reported guidelines on the EQUATOR network ( www.equator.network.org), which also gives general information on how to choose the correct guidelines and why guidelines are important. At minimum, your article should report the content addressed by each item of the identified checklist or state that the item was not considered in the study. Meeting these basic reporting requirements will greatly improve the value of your manuscript, may facilitate/enhance the peer review process, and may enhance its chances for eventual publication.

Structure

The text should, usually, be divided into the sections: Background, Material and Methods, Results, and Discussion.

Word limits

Please include a word count of your manuscript on the title page, excluding word count associated with tables, references, figures, all information held on the title page.

Original manuscripts and reviews have a word limit of 3500 words and up to 5 tables/figures.

Letters have a word limit of 2000 words and up to 2 tables/figures. Short reports and study protocols are also published under the letters section.

Additional materials may be provided as supplementary materials.

Style guidelines

Please refer to these style guidelines when preparing your manuscript.

Please use British or American spelling style consistently throughout your manuscript.

Please use single quotation marks, except where 'a quotation is "within" a quotation'. Please note that long quotations should be indented without quotation marks.

Abbreviations, which are not generally accepted, should be spelled out when first used in text. Uncommon abbreviations and clinical jargon should be avoided.

Footnotes are not accepted.

Formatting and templates

Papers may be submitted in any standard format, including Word. Figures should be saved separately from the text. To assist you in preparing your paper, we provide formatting templates.

Word templates are available for this journal. Please save the template to your hard drive, ready for use.

A  LaTeX template is available for this journal.

If you are not able to use the templates via the links (or if you have any other template queries) please contact us here.

Please supply your manuscript typed with double spacing throughout the article (at least 1 cm between the lines) and margins of at least 4 cm on the left side and at the top.

Please be consistent. The same elements should be keyed in exactly the same way throughout the manuscript.

Do not break words at the end of lines. Use a hyphen only to hyphenate compound words.

Enter only one space after the full-stop at the end of a sentence.

When emphasizing words please use the italic feature of your word processor software.

Do not justify your text; use a ragged right-hand margin.

Use a double hyphen (--) to indicate a dash in text.

Do not use the lowercase l for 1 (one) or the uppercase O for 0 (zero).

The space bar should only be used as a word separator. Use TAB when identifying paragraphs or separating columns in tables.

Tables

Type each table double-spaced on a separate page. Do not submit tables as photographs. Supply a brief title for each table. Give each column a short or abbreviated heading. Place explanatory matter in notes under the table, not in the heading.

Illustrations

Submit illustrations as separate files in TIFF or EPS format, and stored with an image resolution of at least 300 DPI (line figures preferably higher). Figure number should be indicated in the file name. Figure legends should be provided at the last page of the main text. Letters and numerals should be large enough to allow reduction of illustrations to one-column width (8 cm).

References

Please use this reference style guide when preparing your paper. An EndNote output style is also available to assist you.

If there are three or less authors, state all in the reference list. If there are more than three, take the first three and use et al. for additional authors.
