Author Guidelines

Manuscript Submission. Irrigation and Drainage operates an online submission and peer review system that allows authors to submit articles online and track their progress via a web interface. Please read the remainder of these instructions to authors and then click http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ird to navigate to the Irrigation and Drainage online submission site.

IMPORTANT: Please check whether you already have an account in the system before trying to create a new one. If you have reviewed or authored for the journal in the past year it is likely you will have had an account created.

Preprints Policy

Irrigation and Drainage will consider for review articles previously available as preprints. Authors may also post the submitted version of a manuscript to a preprint server at any time. Authors are requested to update any pre-publication versions with a link to the final published article.

Page Charges

There are no page charges applied for publishing in Irrigation and Drainage. Charges apply for authors who wish for their illustrations to appear in colour in the printed version of the journal (see illustrations section below).

ORCID

The ORCID iD is a unique and persistent identifier that distinguishes you from every other researcher – by connecting you with your research contributions and affiliations. Free to use and register for, an ORCID iD increases the discoverability of your research outputs, and helps alleviate mistaken identity. You have full control of your ORCID record, and can control what information is connected and how it is shared. As part of our commitment to supporting authors at every step of the publishing process, Irrigation and Drainage encourages the submitting author (only) to provide an ORCID iD when submitting their manuscript. This takes around 2 minutes to complete. Find more information.

Data Sharing and Data Accessibility

Please review Wiley's policy here. This journal expects data sharing.

Irrigation and Drainage recognizes the many benefits of archiving research data. Irrigation and Drainage expects you to archive all the data from which your published results are derived in a public repository. The repository that you choose should offer you guaranteed preservation (see the registration of research data repositories at http://www.re3data/org/) and should help you make it findable, accessible, interoperable, and re-usable, according to FAIR Data Priniciples https://www.force11.org/group/fairgroup/fairprinciples).

All accepted manuscrips are required to publish a data availability statement to confirm the presence or absence of shared data. If you have shared data, this statement will describe how the data can be accessed, and include a persistent identifier (e.g., a DOI for the data, or an accession number) from the repository where you shared the data. Authors will be required to confirm adherence to the policy. If you cannot share the data described in your manuscript, for example for legal or ethical reasons, or do not intend to share the data then you must provide the appropriate data availability statement. Irrigation and Drainage notes that FAIR data sharing allows for access to shared data under restrictions (e.g., to protect confidential or proprietary information) but notes that the FAIR principles encourage you to share data in ways that are as open as possible (but that can be as closed as necessary).

Sample statements are available here. If published, all statements will be placed in the heading of your manuscript.

INITIAL SUBMISSION

All papers must be submitted via the online system.

File types. Preferred formats for the text and tables of your manuscript are .doc, docx, .rtf, .ppt, .xls. Figures may be provided in .tiff or .eps format.

Upload your manuscript files. At this stage, further source files do not need to be uploaded.

REVISION SUBMISSION

Editable source files must be uploaded at this stage. Tables must be on separate pages after the reference list, and not be incorporated into the main text. Figures should be uploaded as separate figure files.

Electronic Enhancement/Supporting Information. Data that are (i) not amenable to presentation in a traditional print format, (ii) of interest primarily to specialists and do not require Journal page space, or (iii) particularly useful to the community in electronic (downloadable) form can be published online as supporting information hosted within Wiley Online Library.

Copyright and Permissions

You may choose to publish under the terms of the journal’s standard copyright agreement, or Open Access under the terms of a Creative Commons License.

Standard re-use and licensing rights vary by journal. Note that certain funders mandate a particular type of CC license be used. This journal uses the CC-BY/CC-BY-NC/CC-BY-NC-ND Creative Commons License.

Self-Archiving Definitions and Policies: Note that the journal’s standard copyright agreement allows for self-archiving of different versions of the article under specific conditions.

Submitted manuscripts may not have been previously published and may not be submitted for publication elsewhere while they are under consideration by Wiley. Submitted material will not be returned to the author, unless specifically requested.

Permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form.

Manuscript style

Article Preparation Support: Wiley Editing Services offers expert help with English Language Editing, as well as translation, manuscript formatting, figure illustration, figure formatting, and graphical abstract design – so you can submit your manuscript with confidence. Also, check out our resources for Preparing Your Article for general guidance about writing and preparing your manuscript.

The language of the journal is English. Résumés are published in French. 11-point type in one of the standard fonts: Times New Roman, Helvetica, or Courier is preferred. It is not necessary to double-line space your manuscript. Tables must be on separate pages after the reference list, and not be incorporated into the main text. Figures should be uploaded as separate figure files. The approximate position of figures and tables need to be indicated in the text by the author, for example:

Table I: ABOUT HERE.

General Points:

During the submission process you must enter the full title in English and French, short title and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including email, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.

British spelling should be used rather than American spellings.

Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).

Supply an abstract of up to 200 words for all articles in English and French. An abstract is a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work.

Include up to six keywords that describe your paper for indexing purposes.

Submit papers not exceeding 10 printed pages (6000 words), or less than 16 manuscript folios including tables, figures and references.

Please follow closely the on-screen instructions present in ScholarOne Manuscripts.

Reference style. References from international sources are expected. References need to be quoted in the text as name and year within brackets and listed at the end of the paper alphabetically. Where reference is made to more than one work by the same author published in the same year, identify each citation in the text as follows: (Collins, 1998a), (Collins, 1998b). Where three or more authors are listed in the reference list, please cite in the text as (Collins et al., 1998)

All references need to be complete and accurate. Where possible include the DOI for the reference at the end of the reference. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References would have to be listed in the following style:

Ferguson RI. 1985. Runoff from glacierized mountains: a model for annual variation and its forecasting. Water Resources Research 21 (4): 702-708. DOI: 10.1002/wrr.675.

Hillel D. 1980. Applications of Soil Physics. New York: Academic Press.

Cite Early View Articles

To link to an article from the author's homepage, take the DOI (digital object identifier) and append it to "http://dx.doi.org/" as per following example:DOI10.1002/wrr.675, becomes http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/wrr.675. The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is an identification system for intellectual property in the digital environment. Developed by the International DOI Foundation on behalf of the publishing industry, its goals are to provide a framework for managing intellectual content, link customers with publishers, facilitate electronic commerce, and enable automated copyright management.

Illustrations. Upload each figure as a separate file in either .tiff or .eps format, with the lead author's name, the figure number and the top of the figure indicated. Compound figures e.g. 1a, b, c need to be uploaded as one figure. Tints are not acceptable. Lettering needs to be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Where a key to symbols is required, please include this in the artwork itself, not in the figure legend. All illustrations must be supplied at the correct resolution:

Black and white and colour photos - 300 dpi

Graphs, drawings, etc - 800 dpi preferred; 600 dpi minimum

Combinations of photos and drawings (black and white and colour) - 500 dpi

The cost of printing colour illustrations in the journal will be charged to the author. If colour illustrations are supplied electronically in either TIFF or EPS format, they may be used in the PDF of the article at no cost to the author, even if this illustration was printed in black and white in the journal. The PDF will appear on the Wiley Online Library site. It is the responsibility of the author to clarify whether or not the colour figures are required in print when submitting the manuscript for review.

POST ACCEPTANCE

Proofs Authors will receive an e-mail notification with a link and instructions for accessing HTML page proofs online. Page proofs should be carefully proofread for any copyediting or typesetting errors. Online guidelines are provided within the system. No special software is required, all common browsers are supported. Authors should also make sure that any renumbered tables, figures, or references match text citations and that figure legends correspond with text citations and actual figures. Proofs must be returned within 48 hours of receipt of the email. Return of proofs via e-mail is possible in the event that the online system cannot be used or accessed.

Article Promotion Support Wiley Editing Services offers professional video, design, and writing services to create shareable video abstracts, infographics, conference posters, lay summaries, and research news stories for your research – so you can help your research get the attention it deserves.

Further Information. Proofs will be sent to the author for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. Free access to the final PDF offprint of your article will be available via author services only (unless otherwise stated). Please sign up for author services if you would like to access your article PDF offprint and enjoy the many other benefits the service offers. Reprints of your article and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors.

Note to NIH Grantees Pursuant to NIH mandate, Wiley will post the accepted version of contributions authored by NIH grant-holders to PubMed Central upon acceptance. This accepted version will be made publicly available 12 months after publication. For further information, see http://www.wiley.com/go/funderstatement.

Wiley’s Author Name Change Policy

In cases where authors wish to change their name following publication, Wiley will update and republish the paper and redeliver the updated metadata to indexing services. Our editorial and production teams will use discretion in recognizing that name changes may be of a sensitive and private nature for various reasons including (but not limited to) alignment with gender identity, or as a result of marriage, divorce, or religious conversion. Accordingly, to protect the author’s privacy, we will not publish a correction notice to the paper, and we will not notify co-authors of the change. Authors should contact the journal’s Editorial Office with their name change request.
