Articles should include subheadings, tables and text boxes where appropriate. Articles should be illustrated with clear images to make them visually attractive; if appropriate, we are also keen to include video footage with the published online version of the articles, if these are able to show the clinical signs/techniques better than still images. Articles should be double-line spaced and all pages should be numbered.

Photographs and biographies should be submitted for all contributing authors.

CPD quiz: Authors should submit a short self-assessment quiz to be published at the end of the article, in the form of multiple-choice questions. Please provide the quiz with answers upon submission as it will undergo peer review.

Everyday Ethics

Ethical dilemmas that can arise in veterinary practice, issues to consider, and a possible way forward. It is intended that these articles should provide a framework that will help practices find solutions when facing similar dilemmas.

1,000 words

Everyday Ethics articles are usually commissioned; however, if you would like to contribute an article or suggest a dilemma that might be discussed, please email: (lhoney@wiley.com)

Off the record

The aim of the column is to entertain and, generally, articles should convey a message in a light-hearted way that might strike a chord with our readers. Contributions can be written by any member of the veterinary team.

500 words

If you have any ideas for articles or would like to contribute, please email: (lhoney@wiley.com)

Once the submission materials have been prepared in accordance with the Author Guidelines, manuscripts should be submitted online at https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/inpract

Please note that this only applies to clinical articles. Management, Everyday Ethics and Off the Record articles should be emailed directly to the commissioning editor.

The intended audience is the general veterinary practitioner who may not be familiar with the specific subject of the article. The approach should be simple and straightforward, with the emphasis on readability and the use of illustrations to make the article visually attractive.

Main Text File

The main text file should be in Word format and include:

Main body;

References (see style below);

Acknowledgements;

Conflict of Interest statement, if required;

Tables (each table complete with title and footnotes) where appropriate;

Text boxes where appropriate

List of figure legends at the end of the text.

Reference Style

This journal uses Harvard reference style. Review your reference style guidelines prior to submission.

In the text give the author’s name followed by the year in parentheses: Smith (2000). If several papers by the same authors and from the same year are cited, a,b,c etc should be inserted after the year of publication. In the reference list, references should be listed in alphabetical order. Reference to unpublished data and personal communications should not appear in the list but should be cited in the text only (e.g. Smith A, 2000, unpublished data).

Submissions are not required to reflect the precise reference formatting of the journal (use of italics, bold etc.), however it is important that all key elements of each reference are included.

Please see below for examples of reference content requirements.

Figures and Supporting Information

Figures, supporting information, and appendices should be supplied as separate files. You should review the basic figure requirements for manuscripts for peer review, as well as the more detailed post-acceptance figure requirements. View Wiley’s FAQs on supporting information.

For help with submissions or for further information on style and format, please contact: inpractice@wiley.com

In Practice does not charge submission fees.

Most articles published in In Practice are commissioned by the clinical editorial board and management advisory group. However, we are happy to consider suggestions for articles. These should be emailed to (lhoney@wiley.com), and be accompanied by a brief (up to 200 word) synopsis.

Clinical articles are peer-reviewed and all articles are subject to editing and formatting.

2. Peer Review and Ethical Policies

Peer Review

This journal operates under a single-blind peer review model. Articles will only be sent to review if the senior clinical editor determines that the paper meets the appropriate quality and relevance requirements.

In-house submissions, i.e. papers authored by Editors or Editorial Board members of the title, will be sent to Editors unaffiliated with the author or institution and monitored carefully to ensure there is no peer review bias.

Please review Wiley's policy on the confidentiality of the review process.

Open Access

Preprint policy:

Please review the Wiley preprint policy.

In Practice accepts articles previously published on preprint servers.

In Practice will consider for review articles previously available as preprints. You may also post the submitted version of a manuscript to a preprint server at any time. You are requested to update any pre-publication versions with a link to the final published article.

Data Sharing and Data Availability

In Practice encourages data sharing. Review Wiley’s Data Sharing policy where you will be able to see and select the data availability statement that is right for your submission.

Data Citation

Please review Wiley’s Data Citation policy.

Funding

You should list all funding sources in the Acknowledgments section. You are responsible for the accuracy of their funder designation. If in doubt, please check the Open Funder Registry for the correct nomenclature.

Authorship

All listed authors should have contributed to the manuscript substantially and have agreed to the final submitted version. Review editorial standards and scroll down for a description of authorship criteria. All those listed as authors should qualify for authorship according to the following criteria:

1) Have made substantial contributions to conception and design, or acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data;

2) Been involved in drafting the manuscript or revising it critically for important intellectual content;

3) Given final approval of the version to be published. Each author should have participated sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility for appropriate portions of the content; and

4) Agreed to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

Contributions from anyone who does not meet the criteria for authorship should be listed, with permission from the contributor, in an Acknowledgments section (for example, to recognize contributions from people who provided technical help, collation of data, writing assistance, acquisition of funding, or a department chairperson who provided general support). Prior to submitting the article all authors should agree on the order in which their names will be listed in the manuscript.

Author Name Changes

In cases where authors wish to change their name following publication, Wiley will update and republish the paper and redeliver the updated metadata to indexing services. Our editorial and production teams will use discretion in recognizing that name changes may be of a sensitive and private nature for various reasons including (but not limited to) alignment with gender identity, or as a result of marriage, divorce, or religious conversion. Accordingly, to protect the author’s privacy, we will not publish a correction notice to the paper, and we will not notify co-authors of the change. Authors should contact the journal’s Editorial Office with their name change request.

Additional authorship options

Joint first or senior authorship: In the case of joint first authorship a footnote should be added to the author listing, e.g. ‘X and Y should be considered joint first author’ or ‘X and Y should be considered joint senior author.’

ORCID

This journal requires ORCID. Please refer to Wiley’s resources on ORCID.

Reproduction of Copyright Material

If excerpts from copyrighted works owned by third parties are included, credit must be shown in the contribution. It is your responsibility to also obtain written permission for reproduction from the copyright owners. For more information visit Wiley’s Copyright Terms & Conditions FAQ.

The corresponding author is responsible for obtaining written permission to reproduce the material "in print and other media" from the publisher of the original source, and for supplying Wiley with that permission upon submission.

Ethical Policies

In Practice is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), and as such, follows COPE’s guidance in handling ethical concerns raised about research published in the journal. All material published in In Practice must adhere to the highest ethical standards. The journal follows guidelines on editorial independence produced by the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME).

Conflict of Interest Statement

In Practice requires that all authors disclose any potential sources of conflict of interest. Any interest or relationship, financial or otherwise that might be perceived as influencing an author's objectivity is considered a potential source of conflict of interest. These must be disclosed when directly relevant or directly related to the work that the authors describe in their manuscript. Potential sources of conflict of interest include, but are not limited to, patent or stock ownership, membership of a company board of directors, membership of an advisory board or committee for a company, and consultancy for or receipt of speaker's fees from a company. The existence of a conflict of interest does not preclude publication. If the authors have no conflict of interest to declare, they must also state this at submission. It is the responsibility of the corresponding author to review this policy with all authors and collectively to disclose with the submission ALL pertinent commercial and other relationships. The Conflict of Interest statement should be included within the main text file of your submission.

This journal uses iThenticate’s CrossCheck software to detect instances of overlapping and similar text in submitted manuscripts. Read Wiley’s Top 10 Publishing Ethics Tips for Authors and Wiley’s Publication Ethics Guidelines.

3. After Acceptance

First Look

After your paper is accepted, your files will be assessed by the editorial office to ensure they are ready for production. You may be contacted if any updates or final files are required. Otherwise, your paper will be sent to the production team.

Wiley Author Services

When an accepted article is received by Wiley’s production team, the corresponding author will receive an email asking them to login or register with Wiley Author Services. You will be asked to sign a publication license at this point as well as pay for any applicable APCs.

Copyright & Licensing

You may choose to publish under the terms of the journal’s standard copyright agreement, or Open Access under the terms of a Creative Commons License.

Standard re-use and licensing rights vary by journal. Note that certain funders mandate a particular type of CC license be used. This journal uses the CC-BY-NC Creative Commons License.

Self-Archiving Definitions and Policies: Note that the journal’s standard copyright agreement allows for self-archiving of different versions of the article under specific conditions.

Please print and sign our Copyright Assignment Form and upload a copy along with your manuscript files with the designation "Copyright Assignment Form".

Proofs

Once your article has been accepted for publication, the editorial office will be in touch to keep you informed of the schedule for sending proofs to you.

If your article should be published before a certain time or at a particular time of year for it to be most timely and/or relevant then please do let us know by emailing (lhoney@wiley.com), and we will try to accommodate this in our publication schedule.
