Instructions for Authors
Scope
Polis (AGPT) was founded in 1977 to provide a forum for publication to scholars specializing in what was then a neglected sub-field – ancient Greek political thought. More recently, Polis has expanded its coverage to include Hellenistic and Roman political thought. Over the years Polis evolved into a fullyfledged academic journal that publishes material of interest to those who study ancient Greek political thought broadly understood, whether they do so as classicists, ancient historians, philosophers, or political scientists. Polis also welcomes articles on the reception of ancient political thought in Europe, America, or elsewhere. Since its inception the journal speaks for no particular perspective or methodology and it is devoted to the publication of original papers, even though extensive literature reviews, critiques of contemporary research and review essays are also included. All submissions are sent to two referees and normally an editorial decision is taken within 3 months from the time of submission. While Polis primarily features contributions written in English, submissions in French and German are also welcome. The views and opinions expressed in peer-reviewed articles published in Polis are those of the authors and do not reflect the position of Journal.
Ethical and Legal Conditions
The publication of a manuscript in a peer-reviewed work is expected to follow standards of ethical behavior for all parties involved in the act of publishing: authors, editors, and reviewers. Authors, editors, and reviewers should thoroughly acquaint themselves with Brill’s publication ethics, which may be downloaded here: brill.com/page/ethics/publication-ethics-cope-compliance.
Online Submission
POLIS now uses online submission only. Authors should submit their manuscript online via the Editorial Manager (EM) online submission system at: editorialmanager.com/agpt. First-time users of EM need to register first. Go to the website and click on the "Register Now" link in the login menu. Enter the information requested.
First-time users of EM need to register first. Go to the website and click on the "Register Now" link in the login menu. Enter the information requested. During registration, you can fill in your username and password. If you should forget this username and password, click on the "send login details" link in the login section, and enter your e-mail address exactly as you entered it when you registered. Your access codes will then be e-mailed to you.
Prior to submission, authors are encouraged to read the ‘Instructions for Authors’. When submitting via the website, you will be guided stepwise through the creation and uploading of the various files.
A revised document is uploaded the same way as the initial submission. The system automatically generates an electronic (PDF) proof, which is then used for reviewing purposes. All correspondence, including the editor’s request for revision and final decision, is sent by e-mail.
Double-blinded Peer Review
Polis uses a double-blind peer review system, which means that manuscript author(s) do not know who the reviewers are, and that reviewers do not know the names of the author(s). When you submit your article via Editorial Manager, you will be asked to submit a separate title page that includes the full title of the manuscript, the names and complete contact details of all authors, the abstract and keywords, and any acknowledgement texts. This page will not be accessible to the referees. All other files (manuscript, figures, tables, etc.) should not contain any information concerning author names, institutions, etc. The names of these files and the document properties should also be anonymized.
Contact Address
For any questions or problems relating to your manuscript please contact the Editor, Thornton C.
Lockwood: thorntonlockwood@gmail.com. For eventual questions about Editorial Manager, authors can also contact the Brill EM Support Department at: em@brill.com.
Submission Requirements
Language
The contribution should be written in English, French or German. The author is responsible for correct use of the language chosen. Poor grammar, syntax, and command of idiom compromise the attention that a referee is able to pay to the content and argument in an article. Poorly expressed articles will be returned to the author for correction. Non-native speakers are therefore urged in the strongest possible terms to have their contribution corrected by a competent native speaker before submission. The Editor can supply the contact details of freelance professionals who perform this service. The author will be responsible for all expenses incurred.
Length
A contribution to Polis should be no less than 6,500 words and up to 10,000 words. This number of words includes footnotes, bibliography, etc.
Manuscript Structure
Manuscripts must be formatted with wide margins; all matter, including quotations and footnotes, should be double-spaced.
