Journal of International Medical Research
Manuscript Submission Guidelines
Please read before submitting:
This Journal is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics
This Journal recommends that authors follow the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals formulated by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).
Please read the guidelines below then visit the journal’s submission site https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jimr to upload your manuscript. Please note that manuscripts not conforming to these guidelines may be returned. Remember you can log in to the submission site at any time to check on the progress of your paper through the peer review process.
Only manuscripts of sufficient quality that meet the aims and scope of Journal of International Medical Research will be reviewed.
As part of the submission process you will be required to warrant that you are submitting your original work, that you have the rights in the work, that you are submitting the work for first publication in the Journal and that it is not being considered for publication elsewhere and has not already been published elsewhere, and that you have obtained and can supply all necessary permissions for the reproduction of any copyright works not owned by you.
Journal of International Medical Research is a leading international journal for rapid publication of original medical, pre-clinical and clinical research and reviews on a page charge basis.
Every manuscript provisionally accepted by peer review will be assigned a medical copy editor who will work with the author to give the manuscript a full scientific edit to make papers as accessible and readable to the international medical community as possible. This is called the Technical Edit and it combines a scientific content edit, a language edit and a standard journal style copy edit.
1. Open Access
Journal of International Medical Research is an open access, peer-reviewed journal. Each article accepted by peer review is made freely available online immediately upon publication, is published under a Creative Commons license and will be hosted online in perpetuity. Publication costs of the journal are covered by the collection of a page charge which is paid by the funder, institution or author of each manuscript upon acceptance. There is no charge for submitting a paper to the journal.
For general information on open access at SAGE please visit the Open Access page or view our Open Access FAQs.
2. Open Access publication charge
Publication in the journal is on a page charge basis, the current rate being 325 GBP (+VAT where applicable) per PDF page. This page charge is payable when a manuscript is accepted after peer review, before it is published. The page charge is subject to taxes where applicable. Tax-exempt status can be indicated by providing appropriate registration numbers when payment is requested. Please see further details here.
All figures submitted will be printed online in colour free of charge.
3. Optional translation service
The Journal of International Medical Research now offers an optional translation service for authors to have their manuscripts translated from Chinese to English by expert translators and editors ahead of peer review. Prices are based on the length of your document, and we are pleased to be able to offer a special introductory rate of 1.2 Chinese Yuan (CNY) per character. This charge is separate from the Open Access publication charge.
To select this option, please submit your manuscript via the online submission system and select ‘Yes’ to the translation service option at the top of the screen, on the first step of submission. If the translation service is required, the manuscript should be submitted in Chinese but accompanying information, such as author details, must be provided in English.
The translation service is separate from the peer review and publication process and will not affect the editorial decision once the paper is submitted for review, with no guarantee of acceptance.
If you have already had your manuscript translated into English, or have written it in English, then please submit your paper for review as usual through the online submission system. All papers submitted for peer review by Journal of International Medical Research must be in English.
Irrespective of whether or not the optional translation service is used, all manuscripts accepted after peer review will receive the detailed technical edit by expert medical editors for which Journal of International Medical Research is renowned.
4. Article types
Journal of International Medical Research welcomes original articles which demonstrate strong evidence of clinical applicability, are scientifically robust and highly appropriate for an international general medical readership.
The following article types are permitted: Review, Meta-Analysis, Case Report, Pre-Clinical Research Report and Clinical Research Report.
Research Reports should be divided into Introduction, Patients & Methods/Materials & Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, Declaration of Conflicting Interests and References.
Review articles and other types of papers may take their own relevant main headings.
Case reports should be of general interest rather than specialist interest. They must be likely to change routine clinical practice in some meaningful way. Rarity alone is not an appropriate criterion for acceptance. Retrospective case record analyses are discouraged and unlikely to be accepted. Case reports should be divided into Introduction, Case Report, Discussion, Acknowledgements, Declaration of Conflicting Interests and References.
Traditional Chinese Medicine studies are considered if it is clear what the active ingredient is. It must have been isolated and shown to have an acceptable standard of efficacy and safety through randomized controlled trials.
Symposium proceedings, summaries of presentations or collections of medical, pre-clinical or clinical data on a specific topic are welcome for consideration as Supplements and are subject to peer review. Please contact JIMR.admin@sagepub.com for more information on supplements.
Studies involving cell cultures and animal models are considered if they are supported by a clinical study.
Please note that small-scale, localized and pilot studies are discouraged and unlikely to be accepted. Replication in a local sample is not a reason for acceptance – the rationale for the study must be demonstrated.
