Instructions to Authors - Publication Information

1. Aims and scope of FAL

Fundamental and Applied Limnology publishes original contributions containing important new scientic ndings in the elds of "Theoretical and Applied Limnology, including Brackish Water Biology or related elds of (Marine) Biology". The following types of manuscripts are published:

Standard papers: Should be as concise as possible, less than 20 printed pages in the published issue. Longer manuscripts will be accepted for publication in the Main Volumes of the FAL in exceptional cases only. Shorter submissions take precedence when space is limited.

Notes: These should be structured like standard papers and contain short original contributions presenting new methods or other results of general interest.

Comments: Very short papers (max. 2 pages) containing opinions, contributions to current scientic debate or responses to published articles.

Invited reviews: Articles summarizing the state of the art of particular topics of general interest. Authors planning a review article must contact the editors before preparing the manuscript.

All manuscripts are subject to peer review.

2. Manuscript submission

Please submit manuscripts via the electronic Manuscript Management System on

www.schweizerbart.de/journals/fal

First time users please register as author, then follow the submission process. Submission of a manuscript to the electronic Manuscript Management System for publication in the FAL is considered binding assurance that this work has not been and will not be published elsewhere in this form and length.

3. Author’s declaration

The corresponding author certifies that all contributing authors of the submitted manuscript have been informed about this submission, know about the scientific content of the paper and fully agree with the submission to Fundamental and Applied Limnology. Any change in authorship and any changes to the text other than typographical errors have to be approved by the handling editor in charge and one of the chief editors. A brief list of authors contributions to the manuscript have to be inserted after the acknowledgements section.

4. Manuscript preparation

Papers must be written in English and prepared preferably using Microsoft Word for Windows. Please activate line numbering: File/page setup/page layout: Show line numbers, Line numbering: Continuous/Begin with line 1.

To avoid confusion with spacing, right-hand justification should be switched off. Do not use style sheets or templates. Number all pages, starting with 1 on the title page.

Following the title and the author(s') name(s) please indicate the address of the institution where your contribution was produced. A short Abstract without paragraphs and some key words should be given on the rst page of the work. A summary may be given before the references at the end of more comprehensive works.

Figure legends and tables are to be included on (a) separate page(s).

Accentuation Typefaces: Please use only boldface and italics. Please do not use capitals for titles and headlines. Units: Use the International System of Units (SI). Use negative exponents (e.g., mg l-1h-1).

Literature References: All publications referred to in the text, tables and figure captions must be included in the reference list and vice versa. The format of in-text citations should be as follows: for one author: (Jones 2003), for two authors: (Cumchal & Drenner 2004), and for more than two authors: (Jones et al. 2006). Use semicolons to separate multiple citations. Multiple citations in-text should be ordered chronologically.

Reference list: We strongly recommend authors to use the APA 6 reference style to format references. EndNote users may download the EndNote style file at: www.schweizerbart.de/reference_style.

Authors not using EndNote shall follow the APA 6 reference formatting style. If possible, please also supply the Endnote reference file.

5. Illustrations

All illustrations must be labelled with the authors' names and the gure numbers. They must be numbered consecutively as they are referred to in the paper. Labelling should be done using the font "Times" or "Helvetica (Arial)" and must be large enough to allow necessary reductions in size. The font of the illustrations has to be consistent throughout the paper.

Halftone gures should have a resolution of at least 300 dpi (.tif, .eps, .jpeg), line drawings (only .tif or .eps!) should have a resolution of at least 600 dpi, preferably 1200 dpi. Please preferably use vectorized data for line and computer graphics (eps, svg, pdf). This will significantly improve publishing quality and reduce your authors pdf reprint file size.

Each printed colour page will be charged with € 34.90 + taxes. This includes colour in the online version of the article.

6. Proof reading

The corresponding author will receive a pdf of the proof via email. This proof has to be checked and the corrections have to be returned via email to the publishers due to the given deadline. In cases where the author is prevented from making corrections, he/she should appoint a representative to check the proofs. Only typesetting errors or small technical changes are allowed to be made; otherwise the authors will be charged for additional costs. If the corrections are not returned in time, the paper will be published without author's corrections.

7. PrePub (preprint publication)

Manuscripts that are ready to be printed (i.e. accepted by the editors, composed, the proofs checked by the authors and author’s corrections included) will be made available online prior to printed publication. Title and abstracts as well as author’s names will be accessible by all visitors of the Fundamental and Applied Limnology online version. Full text will be available for online journal subscribers. Papers have a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) assigned and may be cited. This service gives the opportunity to have articles available well in advance of their actual printed publication date.

8. Reprints / pdf

The corresponding author will receive free of charge the final pdf of the paper for personal use only (no publication on private or other websites (self storage, repositories); no distribution in newsgroups or mailing lists etc.).

Printed author’s reprints are only available on demand and against costs when ordered prior to the printing process. Please contact the publishers together with the final corrections.

9. Copyright

With acceptance and publication of a manuscript the exclusive copyright for every language and country is transferred to the publishers. The copyright covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article including reprints, microlm or any other reproductions and translations.

10. Online Access

Fundamental and Applied Limnology (formerly: Archiv für Hydrobiologie), is available online from vol. 139 at https://www.schweizerbart.de/papers/fal/volumes. It is part of the CrossRef Service which allows direct access to referenced papers (published in this or other journals) which are available online. Conversely, papers in other journals are now able to link to papers published in Fundamental and Applied Limnology by placing direct reference links.

11.Open Access

For regular papers authors or sponsors can purchase an optional Open Access license (Creative commons CC-BY-NC). For details click the menu button "Open Access / Color fees " on the journal's website https://www.schweizerbart.de/journals/fal.

12. Publication Frequency

Fundamental and Applied Limnology is published by numbers (issues), 4 issues form a volume. Invoicing per volume. Approximately 12 issues of the FAL are published per year, currently that is one issue per month.

Authors are encouraged to place all species distribution records in a publicly accessible database such as the national Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) nodes (www.gbif.org) or data centers endorsed by GBIF, including BioFresh (https://www.freshwaterbiodiversity.eu).
