Submission guidelines

Instructions for Authors

Manuscript types

Research Articles are full-length reports of important original research. Research Articles typically have no more than 5,000 words, excluding references, and must be accompanied by an abstract of 250 words or less. The abstract must be structured into Purpose, Methods, Results, and Conclusion. The abstract must not contain abbreviations at all. References should be limited to 100. Research Articles are always submitted for external peer-review. When reporting clinical trials results, the registration number of the trial must be included in the Abstract and the Methods section, and the CONSORT statement must be followed. Observational (case-control and cohort) studies must follow the STROBE statement. Please, note that contributions using heart rate variability measures as the only or main outcome measures have very low priority for our journal.

Review Articles summarize the current state of understanding of a specific topic of interest. While traditional narrative reviews may be accepted by renowned experts in their respective field of research, the journal prioritizes Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, in which case the PRISMA statement must be followed. Review Articles can have up to 10,000 words, excluding references, and must be accompanied by an abstract of 250 words or less. The abstract must be structured into Purpose, Methods, Results, and Conclusion. The abstract must not contain abbreviations at all. References should be limited to 100. Unsolicited Review Articles are welcome. Both solicited and unsolicited reviews are always submitted for external peer review.

Letters to the Editor report novel, important observations that do not qualify for Research Articles due to the preliminary nature of the findings or other reasons. Case reports or series may be submitted only as Letters to the Editor. Letters may also comment on papers previously published in this journal. Criticism of published work must be objective and supported by experimental data, and any such letter accepted for publication will be shown to the author(s) of the original paper, who will be invited to submit a reply for publication in the same issue of the journal. Letters to the Editors should contain less than 1,500 words, less than 15 references, and may include either one figure or one table, but not both. Letters to the Editor do not have an abstract. Letters to the Editor may be reviewed by external peer reviewers or by the in-house editorial team.

Editorials are almost always invited. If you would like to contribute with an editorial comment, please, contact the editorial office of the journal. Editorials are reviewed only by the in-house editorial team.

Manuscript Submission

Submission of a manuscript implies: that the work described has not been published before; that it is not under consideration for publication anywhere else; that its publication has been approved by all co-authors, if any, as well as by the responsible authorities – tacitly or explicitly – at the institute where the work has been carried out. The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.

Permissions

Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) for both the print and online format and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.

Online Submission

Please follow the hyperlink “Submit manuscript” on the right and upload all of your manuscript files following the instructions given on the screen.
