Hydrology Research
Instructions for Authors
TYPES OF PAPER
(a) Research Papers: these papers are fully documented, interpreted accounts of significant findings of original research. The maximum acceptable length of a Research Paper is 7500 words (less 350 words for each normal-sized figure or table you include).
(b) Review Papers: these are critical and comprehensive reviews that provide new insights or interpretation of a subject through thorough and systematic evaluation of available evidence. They should not normally exceed 8000 words. Manuscripts exceeding 10,000 words will not be accepted for review.
(c) Comment Papers: a Comment Paper which discusses a paper previously published in Hydrology Research should only be submitted after consultation with one of the journal Editors.
(d) Invited Papers: occasionally authors may be invited by the Editors to submit a paper on a particular theme.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Ethics in publishing
You will be required to accept the IWA Publishing Ethics Statement for Authors when you submit your paper to the journal. The statement covers authorship, originality and conflicts of interest. Please read this statement to ensure your submission complies.
Note that conference proceedings are a form of publication.
To verify originality, your article may be checked by the originality detection service CrossCheck.
Changes to authorship
If you wish to add, delete or rearrange the authors of your accepted paper:
Before online publication: The corresponding author should contact the Journals Manager, and provide (a) the reason for the change, and (b) the written consent of all co-authors, including the authors being added or removed. Please note that your paper will not be published until the changes have been agreed.
After online publication: Any requests to add, delete, or rearrange author names in an article published in an online issue will follow the same policies as noted above and result in a corrigendum.
Author Attribution
Please note that it is now requested that each submission is accompanied by a full list of author attributions. This can be included as an additional page as part of the submission items. It should be clearly stated how each author contributed to the research/paper. Please note that this is in addition to the co-author email verification policy.
Open Access Publication
All accepted Hydrology Research papers are published open access, and freely available on http://www.iwaponline.com upon payment of the Article Processing Charge (APC). APCs for Hydrology Research are $1850 / £1400 / €1650. For more information and a full list of IWA Publishing APCs, click here. Usage of papers published open access by third parties is defined by the type of Creative Commons user licence selected by the author (see all options on our Open Access page).
Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to complete an 'Exclusive Licence Agreement' (for more information see our Rights and Permissions page). Permitted third party reuse of open access articles is determined by the author's choice of user licence.
IWA Publishing supports authors in the developing world through its relationship with Research4Life. Authors from Research4Life’s Group A list are exempt from payment of the APC and authors from Research4Life's Group B list are entitled to a 50% APC waiver.
Author rights
For the rights of the author to reuse your work, please refer to the Rights and Permissions page.
Role of the funding source
You are requested to identify who provided financial support for the conduct of the research and/or preparation of the article and to briefly describe the role of the sponsor(s), if any, in study design; in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data; in the writing of the report; and in the decision to submit the article for publication. If the funding source(s) had no such involvement then this should be stated.
Language
Papers must be in good, grammatically correct English. If your paper cannot be understood, it will be rejected. If English is not your native language, you should seek the assistance of a colleague or professional translator. IWA Publishing has partnered with Peerwith, who offer a language editing service: https://iwap.peerwith.com/
In addition, you should always have your manuscript read by at least two other people to avoid typing errors before submitting to a journal.
Submission
Articles should be provided in electronic form (uploaded to our online submission site) and comply with the instructions below.
This journal has no page charges for submission.
Reviewers
When reviewers are invited to review your manuscript they are given 2 weeks to accept an invitation to review (a reminder is sent after the first week). A considerable number of invitations to review are not accepted because incorrect or out-of-date contact details are provided by authors. This results in further delays to the review process as additional reviewers are then sought, and they too have 2 weeks to respond. To ensure reasonable time frames for review please ensure that you are providing the correct contact details required below.
As part of the submission process you are required to propose five independent reviewers. ‘Independent’ in this process means that they should not be work colleagues or friends. They should have specific expertise in the subject area of the manuscript. At least two should be native English speakers, and since we are an international journal, we would want to see a wide geographic distribution (i.e. not just from your country of origin). For each reviewer please provide:
Full name and title
Current post or institutional affiliation – web link if possible
Work email address (rather than a personal address)
Country the reviewer is based in
Reason for proposing this Reviewer
Peer Review Process
All papers that an Editor sends for review will be peer reviewed by a minimum of 2 independent reviewers. You can see the full process here. More information on how to review a paper can be found here.
